Could someone please clarify for me something about switches because I am looking for a cheap gigabit switch and I saw a switch say it has two gigabit ports and the rest 100 bit. I don't know what exact switch it was but I suddenly got confused. I thought all gigabit switches every port is 1000 bits per/s (or something like that). Could someone clarify please? Thanks.

Gigabit=128 megabytes. Can you give me the link to this switch?

How many ports do you need?

I've got a Longshine Switch 8x GE GS7108-D and a Linksys SE2800 both do their job very well. But i like the build quality of the longshine one more (small, metal case), i have it like 5 or 6 years now, never had any problems.

My switch is a 24 port gbit but has 2x 10gbit ports or fibre. These would be used to uplink to another switch so if you have more than 1 port at full utilization you won't get throttling or basically bottlenecked.

If the switch has 2 gigabit ports and the reset are 100 mb then that means that switch has 2 ports which out of 24 ( if it is a 24 port switch)which are gigabit and those ports are called up link ports, which are means that from either one of those ports, you will have it running to another switch or router which then lets the switch be a part of your network. Not all switches are gigabit. It means that the switch can have a link of gigabit but not all ports are gigabit

Not all ports on a switch or router are necessarily the same speed. A switch can have two ports which are faster than the rest (in your case, it has 2Gb port, and the rest are 100Mb ports). It's as simple as that. If you want a gigabit port, make sure that all ports supports up to 1 Gigabit transfer speeds.

The Netgear GS105E and the Netgear GS108NA are examples of switches where all ports are gigabit ports.

By the way, one gigabit is not 1000 bits, it's actually 1,000,000,000 bits. 1000 bits is just 1Kb.

Hope that helped you.
