So I bought an XFX R9 280X DD for $200 used off Ebay. It arrived and looked absolutely perfect. Not a spec of dust in the heat sink or the fans, no scratches in any of the ports. It was practically brand new! It works perfectly so far, except for one thing.

Every once in a while, even on idle, just browsing the interwebs it will kind of do a chugging noise. It comes out of nowhere, and goes out of nowhere, and lasts for about 2-6 minutes.

I just find it weird, because I had the exact same problem with an older card, an XFX 5770 (1gb 850mhz) that I picked up for $50 especially when I booted up. It was so loud.

Is this a common problem with XFX? I always assumed the fans needed to be oiled, but have never gotten around to it.

Also, here's a picture of it. $200 including shipping.

XFX cooler design is not the best

the bearings in the fan could be the problem

Yeah depending on the model of the card you can run into those issues. They didn´t use very good bearings obviously.
