the 5960X + X99 MSI Gaming 9 AC cost almost 2 grand which is what I may get if I save up 200-300 bucks per month.

I still wonder why the 960 only uses 128 bit memory instead of 256bit

I think it will act as a comparison point between the 960 and 960 Ti variants. the 960 Ti's will likely MSRP at 250-300 bucks, but destroy the regular 960, and also beat out the 280x for price and performance, maybe even compete with 290.

I'm just full out speculating, but it really looks like this is what they are going for.

R9 3900XT | Tomahawk B550 | Ventus OC RTX 3090 | Photon 1050W | 32GB DDR4 | TUF GT501 Case | Vizio 4K 50'' HDR

not sure if nVidia will release a Ti version of the 960

that will wreck their 970 sales

The 128bit memory interface is just an economical decicsion. A budget card that will never be run in highend scenarios like 4K or 1440p doesn´t need that much bandwith and no to forget the GM206 has also the same size of L2 cache as the GM204 has. So for 1080p you will have enough bandwith to support the 2GB DDR5 VRAM easily at very low cost.

The Maxwell architecture is anyways just a refined 28nm technology and nVidia is capable with TSMC to prduce very cheap chips. The board partners do the rest and bring up some cool designs and there you go a nice cheap and bad ass looking budget card is made.

Since nVidia changed their pricing politics a bit the GTX960 is just a bonus for the low/mid range segment to relief the GTX760s and 770s of their duties and bring fresh competition to the table where AMD is still strong with its R9 270 to R9 280X cards.

The GTX970 is the real seller of nVidia these days. It´s a very potent chip that comes at a price tag where many people went for the extra mile and spend 100 dollars more to get this GPU.

The GTX980 as the legit successor of the GTX680 was a side grade for me anyhow coming from the GTX 780 Ti SLI, but the card shows its extra potential by going for more than 1080p. Kepler was designed for 1080p and Maxwell with the GTX980 is not. I can see this in benchmarks. The higher I go the more stretches my GTX980 3way SLI its legs, that goes even so far that in 4K benchmarks I have to rub my eyes sometimes how many FPS I get.
