Need Help With PC Components

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

So this is my first build and I wanna know if the components are alright and If I should change something to make it better.

So here's the parts list:

  • Intel Core i7 4790K 4.0GHz box
  • MSI Z97-G45 GAMING
  • NZXT H440 Matte Black
  • HyperX Fury Red 8GB DDR3 1866 MHz CL10
  • Corsair RM Series RM850
  • Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SATA-III 2.5 inch <---- 2 of them in RAID0
  • CPU Corsair Hydro Series H110
  • WD Red 1TB SATA-III IntelliPower 64MB <---- 2 of them in RAID1
  • MSI GeForce GTX 980 GAMING 4GB DDR5 256-bit

I am planning to do some overclock and I wanna have 2 monitors, this is mainly for gaming and sometimes, very rarely, some after effects or sony vegas.

Hello Remikzfully and welcome to Linus Tech Tips forum :)

The parts look great for a powerful gaming build.
Here are a few notes from me:
-As it was mentioned, the i7 is a bit overkill, but if it fits your budget - go for it. Otherwise, you can go wit ha i5-class CPU for gaming.
-I hope the memory is 2x4GB instead of a single 8GB stick (unless you plan on adding another one to make it 16GB). 2x4Gb would make a much better use of the dual-channel support compared to a single 8GB stick.
-Having 2 SSDs in RAID0 as a bootable drive is a popular idea and it does decrease all loading times, but it actually increases your booting time. Games rely on storage only for their loading times (in-game and initial) and FPS and graphics stay unaffected.
-I really like the choice of WD Red and RAID1 for best redundancy. :)
-The GTX980 is also a bit overkill, but, as the CPU, if you can afford it - go for it.
-That PSU is a major overkill for that build, even if you overclock the CPU. It would give you more space for upgrades, though.

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

RM850 is totally overkill for all of that. The 4790K is overkill as well, get a 4690K. Go for an 850 Pro or 850 Evo instead of the 840 if you can, scrap that H110 and replace it with a Noctua NH-D15 with iPPC fans or an H110i (coming soon I believe).

This is very similar to an idea I had for a build earlier and even though the H440 is an AMAZING case... with your cooler you will reach in the upper 90's at stock when stress testing due to the limited airflow. :( I would also use HXi as opposed to RM because I think the RM only uses some Japanese capacitors where HXi uses all Japanese.

Everything looks pretty good to me, except I'm not so sure about the hard drives your getting.

First of all, if you're going to be installing games on those hard drives, WD Red is not the way to go. I'd recommend something like a WD Black if you could spare the money. The performance will be better than a WD Red, as they were each designed for different use case scenarios, and the WD Black fits your needs much better.

Secondly, unless the data you're storing on your hard drive is extremely critical and important, don't go with RAID 1 on them. Just purchase a single, higher capacity drive. If you want to be careful, just make a backup of the important data on that drive onto something like a NAS or home server.

Other than that - looks like an awesome build.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

if you are planning to get a second gpu the 850w psu is fine. i would recommend a crucial mx100 above the evo as it seems to perform better with lower pricing. i am a bit of a g skill fanboy when it comes to ram so i would like you to consider the gskill sniper which will probably be cheaper but its your choice

I am planning to get a second GPU so I'm gonna keep the PSU but switch it with HXi one.

I switched the SSDs as well, I got a 850 Pro 256 GB and scrapped the RAID.

Same thing for HDD, I switched it with the WD Black 2TB, scrapped the raid as well.

If you reach upper 90's at stock with a H110 then you are doing something wrong. With the right fan setup the H440 will be fine with these components.

Also you don't need to stress test. Playing a game will tell you if the pc is stable.

How can you reach 90 degrees with that case it has limited airflow so use Static pressure fans which you always need to do for AIO anyway. Seriously something is wrong. On my case (Antec One) I run never above 50 while gaming and I have 1 x 140mm and 3 x 120mm fans and a 30 euro CPU fan cooler. If he runs 4 SP intake fans and 3 airflow out take fans in the H440 and a closed loop on his PSU (using the bottom intake) he wouldn't reach high temps at all.

My reccomendation:

Since you aren't going to be doing AE and Sony Vegas a lot. Get a 4670K OC it and get dual GTX 970's . Also the case has cooling problems, I would swap it out for any phantecs case that fits the buget.
