My GPU is a Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-X.

Stock core: 1030

Stock memory: 1400

When running a full benchmark on Valley (at max settings), it gives 62 average fps.

Using Afterburner, i have clocked it to different speeds.

My current one:

Core: 1125

Memory: 1500

Apparently you cant overclock these cards much more than that.

Now i know that it isnt a that big increase in speeds, but the average fps on a benchmark doesnt change at all.

Is this just me wanting too much? Apparently i cant clock much higher, and i might as well keep it at stock if overclocking like this does nothing.

Anything i should know, or isnt this supposed to increase performance at all in the first place? Anything i havent done that i probably should?

In Afterburner it is set to +25%. Funny thing i noticed yesterday while testing: It does nothing to the performance. I tried 0, +10, +25. No difference. Even when putting it lower, nothing happened.

Oh yeah, sorry. Well, i dont know, but in the newest version of Afterburner it doesnt show it like that. Like, the high number you have there. Atm it is at +25 though, so i assume that is +25 from default? How much would i want to put it on?

Oh, and anyways, in that case, what does the power limit do?

Just open the settings tab and change the interface in the User Interface tab if you want the old one back. Also, did you enable Overdrive in the Catalyst Control Center? That can cause the OC to revert to stock clocks, and go to the General Tab of the settings and make sure voltage control is unlocked.

i was monitoring my OC and i couldnt understand why valleybench mark gave me lower score after each try with higher settings.

then i read on this forum that you must change your OC settings, save em and restart your computer, and then run the benchmark.

once i started doing that, i could easily keep track of my OC scores. once i get home i can copypasta the log of my oc trial, in case i'm confusing you.

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

+30 more than stock should be ok but you can always try more and benchmark to see if it need more.

Afterburner puts +25 as the stock settings thing. So i should try higher than that, then? Even up to around 50, if i understand correctly?

A lot of AMD cards don't really benefit massively from overclocking due to fairly aggressive stock clockspeeds.  I personally don't recommend overclocking them at all since it's very easy to actually get worse performance as it can produce memory errors and what not.

You'd probably notice a higher score in 3DMark and maybe something like Crysis 3, but for the most part they're already pushed to their limit in the factory.

lol. I beg to differ. If you dont provide enough voltage for a hard task you wont get more fps simple. I get fps boost in every game out there with overclock as longest i provide sufficient voltages.

Depends on the card still, but generally I've had ~4-5 AMD cards and couldn't get much of a beneficial overclock out of any of them regardless of voltage tweaking.  Popped my GTX 980 in and almost instantly got a 15% overclock.  Maybe I just had bad luck. Most of the reviews I've read and 3DMark scores tend to echo the opinion that these cards don't overclock very much.

So it seems like i cant possibly get more than about 6 fps increase on a Valley benchmark, from stock to OC settings, See below.

Core: 1030 stock, 1125 OC

Memory: 1400 stock, 1500 OC

Core volt: +0 stock, +50 OC

Power limit: +50% on both.

Might as well give up and leave it at stock settings since it does about just as good there, right?

Try playing actual games with it.  I'd recommend trying Battlefield 4 or Crysis 3.

Battlefield 4 in particular is very sensitive about overclocks last I tried.  my 270X's would crash the game at anything more than a +5 MHz core overclock.

Im not gonna be able to play anything atm, will have to wait until tomorrow. But anyways, is there even a point in having the overclock at all when benchmarking software shows virtually no increase in performance whatsoever?

5-10 FPS is about the norm for gpu overclocking, barring more extreme watercooling and higher voltage cards.

Im just gonna stick with the stock clocks after seeing the results. So even for.. for example GTX 970 or 980 cards, some of which can be overclocked pretty heavily, even on those it would only give such a small difference?
