Hi guys,

I am building my first gaming/day-to-day task PC and I have a bit struggle of understanding how much and what type of RAM should I choose.

My CPU: i5 4690K

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 3

GPU: Sapphire r9 290 Tri-X

My questions are:

1) Will 8GB DDR3 be enough?

2) What frequency should I choose?

3) What is the difference between 2x4GB and 1x8GB?

Thanks in advance.

8GB is fine, 16GB is typically extreme for most people.

1600MHz and CL9.

2x4 will run in dual channel, which is slightly faster. Also consumes more slots, eg. less expansion. 1x8 will run slightly (not very noticable) slower, but has most expandability.

1. for gaming yeah, but you will have to upgrade to 16 GB later on (probably)

2. 1600 MHz, but I don't think it makes a huge difference...

3. 2x4GB is faster (Because Dual Channel and stuff.. Don't know how to explain, I'm sorry)

Dual channel means information can be sent or received to both sticks in the same cycle instead of waiting two cycles on one stick. (Roughly)

1. as said before 8gb is enough on my own rigg i only use 4gb with gaming load

2.  1600mhz is good enough but if you videoedit or just want overkill you can get higher

3. 2x4 is faster but you can only get to 16gb later but that will be more than enough for gaming and daily use only for video editting you need more
