550w GPU vs. 520w PSU

Vanguard

Hi.

I'm wondering whether this fanless 520 watt 80PLUS PLATINUM PSU; http://www.seasonicusa.com/Platinum_Series_FL2.htm could support my 550 watt graphics card? (XFX Radeon HD6950 2GB).

I have a CPU with a TDP of 125 watts (If that is of importance).

I have a watt meter (or whatever the actual thing is called) plugged in to my outlet which has never exceeded 400 watts (including speakers and a broadband modem, leaving about perhaps 350 watts max for the computer), so, does that mean I'm safe?

1. That's not a 550W GPU

2. Yes that's more than enough but you are paying a massive premium for nothing really

I recommend getting the XFX XTR550 instead or CS550, Seasonic G/X-series, EVGA 500/600B instead

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

The 6950 pulls ~150w at load and not 550w. A decent 500w should easily power the system.

Teach a man to fish...

In the future, google something like "6950 power consumption" and click a review like the bit-tech one. The load power consumption in that review is the entire system running an extreme benchmark, and it's hitting 260W -a far cry from a figure like 550W that AMD might give you.

Yes, well, I have. Problem is that this page (in danish); https://www.komplett.dk/product/639513#!tab:extra, says that the minimum requirement is a 550w PSU, which is why I ask..

What i'm looking for here is the fact that it is fanless = no noise :) And it is platinum instead of the bronze I have now. Don't know how much power that'll save me.

Ignore psu recommendations listed in graphics card specs. They are highly inflated to cover the manufacturers' butts.

Why would it matter for the psu to have no noise? Any decent psu should be much quieter than your 6950.

The difference in efficiency rating would make likely make a negligible difference in your power bill.
