@timmywity I would probably stick with the original systems given the choice.  Combo consoles just seem a bit janky to me.  The main advantage to them is typically the ease of connectivity.   I think I'd just look for adapters to make it happen with the old school consoles.

The Atari 2600 was fun.  I always liked River Raid, Defender, Subterranean, Yar's Revenge, Pitfall...

If you want to do it legit and are willing to spend as much as a Retron 5 AND you don't already have a massive collection of cartridges? Don't rule out Nintendo's Virtual console options. Admittedly it's a bit all over the place but each of their systems post-Wii has a decent library of content for at least two systems and all have a fair bit to offer outside of the VC. So just breaking it down....

Wii:

+ is cheap

+ has VC for NES, SNES, N64, Arcade, Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Neo Geo, TurboGrafx as well as some Arcade titles

+ is almost a "retro" system with a big library of games

- is almost a "retro" system with all the negatives that come with that

Wii U:

+ adds GBA games to the list, also has a DS title but only one so far

+ is a current system with a fair chunk of the games that were worth playing in 2014

+ The GamePad allows you to play games off-TV, a massive plus for retro titles IMO

+ Everything runs through HDMI so it looks pretty fantastic

+ full support for everything you could do on the Wii (including VC) in a little Wii sandbox mode

- isn't cheap at all if this is just for the retro games

- you can't use Gamecube Controllers for VC titles

- it's basically just NES, SNES and GBA games at this point if you ignore WiiMode (which you will)

3DS/2DS:

+ Completely portable

+ Has a pretty decent list of Gameboy and Gamegear games as well as NES titles

+ A decent list of games outside of the VC and is still a relevant platform

+ is reasonably cheap

- will still cost more than most other options

- has no SNES, GBA or any other games really outside of NES, Gameboy and Gamegear

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing
