I recently moved my system from a Cooler master CM 590 in a Define R5. I actually wanted a Define case since R2 came out, but since I moved and my PC changed form a bedroom PC to the central part of the living room I really needed to do something about it now.

When I did build this system I had some silence in my mind and did put a Noctua NH-U12P (with adapters) in it.

I have two problems at the moment. The first one is hard disk resonance, I have to 1 TB Seagate disks this system that are noisy but are also causing the whole case to resonate. I did use the included grommets so I have no idea what can be causing this. When these drives are off (they only contain data, and if Windows likes me for once they are sometimes allowed to spin down), the system still makes a fan noise. This is not my GPU, because if I run the fan at 100% for a while and then let automatic cooling take over the sound is still the same. So this can be my CPU cooler or my PSU, but I am not sure.

My CPU runs really cold at idle but because I have no way of changing the speed of those Nocuta fans I am afraid it will go wrong under load if I further reduce their speeds with resistors.

Does anybody have experience with a similar situation? I was thinking about replacing the fans on my heat sink with NF-P12 PWM fans so that my motherboard can reduce their speed. But then I still have the PSU left, would it be possible to replace the fan of this PSU from 2008 (no warranties to worry about anymore) with one of the NF-P12 non PWM's that are on my heat sink right now. It seems really wastefull to buy a new PSU for noise reasons.

It can be changed but it's tricky and requires soldering . You can test if it's the psu by simply inserting some nonconductive long piece of something into the fan , just enough to stop it , don't start touching around inside

Going PWM fans for the CPU is your best options in this situration. Regarding the PSU, changing its fan is sometimes more tricky than you think. Also PSUs usually have 135mm fans so good luck finding a good quality aftermarket one. It will be better if you just bought a straight passively cooled PSU. Seasonic has some very good and not that expensive units available.

The weird thing is that SPCR called this PSU "the quietest fan-cooled PSUs we've tested to date" But this was in 2006, so I assume that is not the case anymore. This PSU and my optical drive are since the CM590 is replaced the only things form my original 2008 build that are left.

I can not jam the fan at the moment because it is dark here and I need someone to lift the case (I live alone), but if I put my ear to the place where the PSU is located I can clearly hear the PSU, it is also rattling a little bit. I assume this is all due to the age of the thing. Some searching revealed that it is a 120 mm fan that it is rated for 85 CPM, so the NF-P12 that are on my CPU cooler right now are powerfull enough, probably even with L.N.A.

Have you screwed the hard disk drive sleds to the side of the drive cage? I found this almost completely eliminated this problem.

yup, rubber pads and screwing the drive sleds to the cage vastly reduces vibrations, I have the R5 with additional front fan, in few days my be quiet! PSU and Noctua NH-D15 arrives, I hope after that It will be very silent

we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion...
