No, you can only run two, three, or four cards of the same model. Even a 660 and a 660ti won't work together. You can SLI two different manuafacturer's cards - i.e.: an Asus 770 and a MSI 770 can be SLI'ed.
TL;DR You're correct and your friend is wrong. You can only SLI cards of the same model.
