I've always been told that the only way it helps is if you are using an APU with onboard graphics. That being said, I am currently using 1866mhz ram.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

In most cases, different ram speed won't make a huge difference, even in high usage programs such as editing software, or Triple A games. Not many programs in today's date are taking (huge) advantage of higher ram  speeds. However, this may drastically change in the future, and since higher speed ram isn't THAT much more than slightly slower speed ram, I would probably invest in it.
