Hi all, I have had countless issues with my rig. Most of which seem to have been fixed now; only 'issue' I had was Win 8.1 sometimes hagning at desktop when turned on but a restart fixes that and it is only once every so often. But my back panel audio has just died, it works to a point. The volume is very low and very static sounding, it is very bad with headphones but my front panel works fine. I am wondering if maybe the audio card has simply gone? Or maybe the jack? Is it normal for intergrated sound to die? I have an MSI z87 gd65 and am unsure how to diagnose it. I tried both speakers and headphones and the problem persists but is not as bad with speakers.

Its is not normal and if you had the ability to swap with a different CPU to see if was the CPU that would super helpful but most likely if you can you should RMA the board because it does sound like the integrated sound chips have shorted out of have been heavily damaged.

I have no idea how to fix this, but here's a few ideas.

Things I would try though is to completely remove the audio drivers, then download and install the latest Realtek high definition audio drivers directly from Realtek's site @ http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#High%20Definition%20Audio%20Codecs

See if that helps.

You could also try to gently clean the inside (holes) of the audio ports on the backplate with an ear bud dipped in alcohol (please shut the PC off and disconnect all power or it could short the board out) - this is to remove possible dust.

You can also open your case and double check that no cables or wires are hanging on the motherboard or against the backplate which could cause a short or interference.

Good luck!

P.S.  Any chance that you have an optical cable to try the SPDIF connection, which would test the onboard soundcard to see if it is faulty?

I have replaced all of the drivers, twice :/. I have blown inside the ports but will shut off and have a clean with an ear bud, have no more alcohol handy though and can't buy it in shops over here in the UK. As for the backplate, never thought of checking for wires. My wires are a bit messy so that could be possible; I'll have a check and I do not have one of those cables, never even heard of them :P

Is it possible the board has static damage? Or would it be a lot more aparent than just the sound card being faulty?
