Will the next chipset of mainstream motherboards support DDR4? I'd like it if I could get a Z107, or whatever they'll be called, board that supports DDR4 after Broadwell enters the market. I'm under the assumption that they'll only support DDR3 though. I just want to be sure though so that I don't get my hopes up.

From what we've heard some boards will be DDR3 and some will be DDR4. So it supports both, but depends on the board.

Z170, H170, B150, Q110 and a few others will have DDR4 and DDR3 options available to them, these chipsets will be released with Skylake (The CPU line after broadwell)

How would we know? IRL it makes really no difference for consumers. For servers less voltage makes a difference when running ex. 30 servers with 16 dimms each.

Currently there's only X99 and X97 boards with only DDR3 and DDR4 on seperate boards so you have to choose between the two.

Although there are meant to be boards coming out to support both. However i don't understand how they're managing this considering the pins on DDR4 and 3 and in different places.

Skywell i think.

http://www.techpowerup.com/205231/how-intel-plans-to-transition-between-ddr3-and-ddr4-for-the-mainstream.html

Broadwell will remain on Z97 and eventually, on X99.

The next major chipset revision comes with Skylake.

However, don't hold your breath over the performance of DDR4,

"Skylake" Core processors come out in 2015. That's going to be when DDR4 enters mainstream client platforms.

What's X97 ? Do you mean X79?

DDR4 is exclusively for X99 right now and I don't think we will see boards with hybrid designs for DDR3 and DDR4 because this would mean that the board partners would have to build separate RAM sockets on each board. Unlikely to see this on consumer grade mainboards. Didn't even happen with server grade and enthusiast grade.

DDR3 has 240 pins and DDR4 has 288 pins. So the DDR4 RAM stick is longer.

Looking forward to Skylake as I already jumped on the X99 train but I'm still excited to see the potential in the 14nm and the possibilities for even more compact computers than the in my opinion still way too large mini itx rigs (I'm not saying that the board is too big but rather the case, and PSU, with a smaller power consumption in Skylake processors, we might get even more compact and powerful pcs)

I think he meant z97. But even then it would make completely no sense.

Haha that's the one thing only he/she can answer ;) .

In all reality for gaming there's no need for DDR4 right now. Productivity is another story, I recently built a workstation with an i7 5960x and 32GB DDR4... the client I built the PC for used to have an i7 4770K before... that X99 is such a beast when it comes to rendering and editing.

I'm using mine for rendering as i'm building an X99 system.

Also my point was that i agree... i don't understand how Skylake platforms are going to work because of the pin difference. Unless they put a slider or something around the RAM section? I have no idea how that's meant to work.

Thanks for clarification :). Now your point is totally understandable.
