You won't use the i7 to it's full advantage for gaming. If you're planning to get a boost, try selling the 970 and get a 980

Specs? If you lack a SSD, grab one. If not, save it up.

many games have released recently that can leverage 8 cpu threads such as watchdogs, battlefield 4, CoD:AW, farcry4, dragon age inquisition and assassin's creed unity and it's a trend that will continue with consoles being able to run highly multithreaded games that's a given so for the sake of ''future-proofing'' imho its worth trowing it in the basket if you can afford it even for gaming alone...

stepping up to a 980 will give such a little increase in performance and gpu dont age very well where as a good cpu like the i7 will likely last you and be relevant to gaming for years...the choice to me is obvious.

thats pretty nice but the msi gaming 5 has ALL the important features of the gaming 7 but at lower cost...my suggestion is to pair the i7-4790k and the z97 gaming 5 motherboard for your build...also 8gb is plenty for current games but again for the sake of future-proofing the machine a little more i understand the need for 16gb.

current games that uses the most ram are cod:aw using 6.5gb with windows 8 and goodies running and dragon age inquisition in the same condition use 7gb at times...most games uses less than 4gb though.

actually i can get gaming 7 for 154 bucks and gaming 5 for 150 bucks :P

oh i see...ok then hehe!

you could also check the price of hard drives if the black drive is significantly more expensive than anything else from seagate or WD its not worth it because its not any faster...its all marketing gimmick.

Generally, it's pretty much like this:

i7 4790/4790K — Video/Photo editing

i5 4690/4690K — Gaming

I know some may disagree, but that's generally how I see it. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

For future proofing I would go for the i7. It has better single core performance and also has hyperthreading, which will come in handy if you plan on streaming or editing. As for the motherboard I would swap for the Gaming 5, unless the Gaming 7 is a must have due to a color sceme or what not. 16 GB of ram can come in handy with multitasking and will match the i7s performance so you'd be good for that.

But if you do happen to go for the i5, get a watercooler. The stock coolers dont cut it for gaming to be honest. My last build was an i5 and I had the stock cooler and about died when I seen the temps it was runing. Swapped it out for a h100i and overclocked to 4.6 and never had a problem til the motherboard had a failure.

Let me put it this way. Get the i5 if you never plan on doing youtube stuff or streaming to twich an such things. Get the i7 if you do plan on doing those things. Then with the extra money you have I'd get a 1080p 60Hz monitor assuming you'll be using the one that you have in your location haha. I hope this helps a bit.

Oh and on a last note, the Gigabyte windforce OC 970 is much better than the MSI twin frozr.

this was true last year and all the years before but things are changing and games now start to really favor the i7 cpus...the core i5 is seeing very high usage in some games now to the point where its getting scarry at times

one can only assume that this is a trend that will continue in the future, that's a given.

Generally, it's pretty much like this:

i7 4790/4790K — Video/Photo editing/Streaming/CPU-based video recording/Very heavy multitasking/10% or so of newish games

i5 4690/4690K — Gaming

I know some may disagree, but that's generally how I see it. :)

Had to add a little extra things that the i7'd benefit from over the i5. Not that the i5 is a bad processor; just that people oversell the i5 and undersell the i7 JUST a little bit.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

i think you should check reviews of the twinfrozr V cooler on these cards mate...the only downside to msi gaming cards is that they don't come with a backplate...but they run quieter and just as cool.
