I was using my Dad's pc today and have realized that it is probably the slowest thing in the house, he's using a amd a8-5600k. That being said, I would like to upgrade his motherboard and cpu. The budget for this would be around $350. For the CPU I am looking at the i5-4690k (http://goo.gl/0HpRl4), but I don't know what motherboard to get him. I want it to be ATX just to make my life easier lol, but I don't need it to be overkill. Any ideas on what motherboard I should go with? Or maybe you have a different idea as far as the cpu and motherboard go. I am open to all suggestions!

Not too much, I just want him to have a faster computer like mine. He's always puts me and my mom first and I would like to return the favor.

Then get him a decent i3. I just don't like letting people wasting money for no reason.

"Not too much" doesn't really help us out any. Putting a $250 chip in a stereotypical household family computer is like putting a supercharged V8 engine in a Mini Cooper for your grandma. It's a waste.

You could easily get away with a i3, or a lower end AMD chip (i.e. Fx-6300), with a sub $100 mobo. Also, putting in an unlocked chip is quite useless as well, as I doubt your dad will be OCing.

I assume most i3s will outpace his current cpu?

Any current i3 should be more than enough for him.

Well the unlocked version seems to be cheaper than the locked version so I would go the between the cheaper of the two. I like the idea of going with the i5 route because I would be taking the extra step, instead of getting just enough. He spends crazy money on me, so I don't mind doing this even if it is overkill.

On new egg the 4690k is $300 regularly vs. the regular $250 for the locked.

But something much cheaper like a i3 4330 would be a much more logical choice.

We have different prices.

I was looking at CAD, not USD, that's why my prices are more, and I only looked at Newegg.

Regardless, that proc is completely overboard and a serious waste of money.
