I don't think there's a huge improvement, but i'd say Win 8 or 8.1...

Ummmmmmm over all in my experience i would say win7.

I say this because i have had better comparability with games in win7 than i have had with win8.1
(mostly mouse acceleration or display issues).

But saying that i'm using windows 8.1 on my desktop and it's working great with new games.

If your looking to buy an OS Right now and you have no OS At the moment then get 8.1 and install Classic Shell.

 

Windows 8.1 is faster than 7 and is quite the bit better but if you own Windows 7 already then don't bother as the cost wouldn't justify the improvements.
