Hello

I have an old computer that I found in my house, it was bought some time between 2008 and 2009. Anyway I was looking into salvaging some parts from it to build a PC for a younger member of my family. It's not a custom built PC it is an off the shelf Dell XPS Studio 8100. Therefore i'm not really interested in re-using stuff like the motherboard or PSU, it's all pretty cheap nasty looking stuff.

However one thing that I am interested in re using is the CPU. I think it may be an intel i3, which based on the year that I bought the computer would make it a 1155 socket sandy bridge. However I can't be sure of this so I want some way of identifying it, and no I don't still have the box or manual anymore =(.

Obviously I could just boot it up and check in computer specifications, but currently the PC isn't bootable,

I want to know if I could just take it out of the motherboard and there is some way of identifying it, by like a marking of some sort either on the cpu or motherboard.

Any help would be great thanks.

if its an intel, they usually list the name of the cpu on top of the cpu itself after you remove the heat sink.

If you clean off all the thermal paste on the CPU, there should be the model number of the CPU, like the picture below:
