I have a 4670k with a GTX 780 on a Gigabyte Gaming 5 z97 board. I've got a Corsair H110 installed on my CPU and it stays below 40 while under heavy load.

I'm just wondering if overclocking is really worth it or is it just purely for fun. How much of a performance increase can I see and how can I safely overclock my i5?

Performance increases will vary depending on what you use the system for.

You might as well oc considering you have the aftermarket cooling already.

I guess so right? However I don't want to push the chip too hard as I have never done this before. Also, would I still be able to get 3 years out of it with a strong clock speed? Lastly, can I overclock only the turbo speed so my base clock speed is still stock?

You should be fine as long as you keep temps below ~80-90c at load and core voltage under ~1.3v

Clock speed has no effect on the lifespan of the cpu.

I was able to overclock my 4670k to 4.5ghz.. I've seen some able to do a little more as well. As far as performance increase, it helps it games that are rather cpu intensive. Far Cry 3 for me was able to hold more consistent frame rates as well. All I did to overclock mine was to just change the multiplier in the BIOS. There are plenty of overclocking guides out there. Here is the video Linus did on it a while back. http://youtu.be/0CHs5_TdpXE

Cool, thanks for the help! :) I just don't want to put my CPU at risk. I'm looking to get at least 3 years out of it. Should I use the board or Intel extreme tuning utility?

Use the uefi bios.

Yeah Linus' video was mostly helpful to people with ASUS boards though. Mine is a Gigabyte z97 board.
