New build

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

Go with the i5, you will be so much better off.  While the processor of AMD is less expensive, you still need an 8+2 VRM phase motherboard and aftermarket cooling, which ends up costing the same as Intel, while delivering sub par performance.  Go with an i5.

I'm planning a new build and the price of it is waaaay over budget, i know for a fact that AMD's processor equivalents are cheaper than intel's. So my question is what is the AMD equivalent to a over-clockable quad core processor (similar to the i5 4670k) and what is a good motherboard to go with it. the CPU must have the ability to be over-clocked and the motherboard must support crossfire but SLI is optional/not really needed. My price budget it £500 and this is my current selection:

Thanks for all your help and any other suggestions to lower the price or increase the performance of this build are greatly appreciated!

AMd doesn't really have an equivalent. They have the 8350 which is their competitor to the 2500k/3570k.

This belongs in the CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory section. I'm moving the thread.

That current build seems fine, by dropping to £500 to retain overclockability you pretty much lock yourself into an AMD socket as I'm not recommending the G3258.

If you need to save money a locked i5 4460 + B85 is still a lot better than any AMD offering.

I tried to shave off what I could with an amd cpu, but I really couldn't get to your budget while maintaining acceptable overclocking abilities,

You'd need to give up the ssd or the hdd and get a cheaper case.

The 4460 is currently better than the 8350 for gaming but not a lot better.

In content creation processes that are heavily threaded and properly optimized, the 8350 can still contend with if not almost sweep the floor with an oc'ed 3570k.

3D rendering in maya is a good example where the software is properly optimized to take advantage of the 8350's architecture and cores.

Hmm the 4460 is like up to 50-60% faster in games and in Maya, only if you're rendering it's a tad faster. Just when you're modeling the i5 is far more reponsive

Sure--'up to 50-60%', maybe more depending on how hard a game tanks with slower thread but the difference isn't massive overall.

I was just making clear that the 4460 is better for gaming but not necessarily for everything else.

I wouldn't say the 4460 is far more responsive for modeling. The cpu shouldn't make much of a difference in terms of responsiveness for modeling as long as the cpu isn't sub-par.

A lot of the popular games/series in the top 100 played on steam run quite a bit better on an i5 than they do on an FX

Skyrim, CIV, Total War, GTA, ARMA2/3, DayZ, lots of indies.

And other things like Minecraft and MMOs run much better on i5.

And the 4460 solution typically runs cheaper than the FX8350 would in the end. He'd be hard stretched to get a 83X0 solution in close to his budget, 6300 and 4460 would run a similar price (~£550), and when the 6300 is overclocked it'll only be marginally faster in multithreaded and still lag behind in the aforementioned games.

i5: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/nkXdt6

FX6: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/j4sPhM

The pro to the 6300 is the overclocking part- which I kept in mind with my part choices, an overclockable intel solution would easily be £100 more.
