Small SSD...Advice Please :)

I just got a 64 GB SSD. It is a old one my friend gave me.

Anyways I have Win 7 ultimate, do you think win 7 ultimate would fit on that?

I googled the question and got a few different answers so I am looking to you fellas for some knowledge.

I want Win 7 ultimate on it and BF3. Maybe a few other small programs depending on the left overs.

Anyways I have never had a SSD before, I am a admin at a energy company and we have plenty of SSD's in our camera system DVR's so I have messed around with them before I am just not very proficient with them.

Is it ok to fill them pretty full? I know on HDD you want to leave a good amount of empty space for it to work with.

So 64GB and I will have a low Page file and take hibernation off and automatic system restore points off.

Real world experience how much space would Win 7 ultimate take up?

Windows 7 takes about aroun 35gb, bf3 is about 20. Not very wise to fill it up that much.

just save up until you can get a nice 120gb ssd.

Like I said I got it for free.. so why not use it, I have like over 10 sperate 1 TB HDD's that I get free from work plus like 20 500GB drives so I am good on storage. Which is good because I have 3 TB full of TV and movies and identical 3 - 3TB drives in my closet as backup because I would die if I lost all of that media.

Is it physically bad for the drive to fill it full, like fill it up where there is only like 2-5 GB of free space?

But yes one of these paycheck or my bonus next month I will grab a 120 or maybe bigger, I have been meaning to for ages.. just have all these bills, I hate being a adult.. I want to be a kid with my knowledge now so I can be care free and have all my extra loot go towards components.

That is way different then what everyone else has said.. I am guessing no games just regular programs, like office, etc?

I just have smaller applications. Nothing over a GB. One game might fit on there if you just have it and Windows.

Alright yeah that is what I was thinking.. that is what I want to do. I guess I don't need games on my SSD. When I get a bigger one I will. I just looked on Newegg and they got 500GB SSD's for $200 ish.. there is a 480GB for $175! holy shit they got CHEAP (compared to a couple years ago).

I will install it on my learning computer (junk computer for cloning and VM's etc..) and the programs I need and use my other drives for storage.

I am still confused on if it is safe to leave less buffer space then a HDD?

HDD has platters and moving parts but SSD's are different that is why I ask.

If you can make sure that you can keep everything off the ssd except the O/S then go for it. Yeah, it will be tight, but this drive isn't going to be hanging around for that long. 64gb is old, obsolete, slow and just not all that great a drive. OTOH, it's free, you have it and it won't hurt anything to use it for a while.

Go for it!

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

I agree with this. Seeing as you have ample HDD space you should be able to move almost everything large off your SSD. You can manually install programs onto your HDD (I recommend you install Steam on your HDD and install all you games in the defualt folder as some games don't work when installed in a different folder). You can also move the folders in your "Users\[Your name]" folder, including those in "AppData" to your HDD. More on that here:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-move-windows-7-personal-folders-my-documents-another-drive.htm

As long as your HDD is not removed this should work perfectly.

I've only used 50GB of my 120GB SSD with all my programs installed (not Steam or any games), so you should be able to manage a 64GB SSD :)
