Cpu thermal throttle

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

Stock/default settings work fine.

I am not sure what vrm is but I get 2 fans with the case and have 1 extra fan that I bought separately.

I doesn't matter much to me to get an overclock over 4 ghz I like that number since it's only 0.1 hz over turbo boost.

Yea, stock settings on an FX6 with that motherboard should be ok.

Here is a picture of your motherboard, I highlighted the VRMs in red.  If possible, try and get some direct airflow over them.  You might have to ghetto rig a fan or something.

6lEWVff.jpg

I want to overclock my fx 6300 to 4 ghz since it is only a little bit higher than turbo boost oc.

Default is 3,5ghz turbo to 3,9ghz.

Should I leave it on or off, what percentage should I put throttle on?

I currently have 1,25core at 4ghz I am currently stress testing with prime 95.

It seems to throttle at 59-60 celsius which I think is too early, I would prefer it at 65 or something.

I am currently at 51minutes stress testing with prime 95 blend test.

I am still new to tech/oc stuff so I don't know what to do.

I currently have cpu throttle at 50% and cool n' quiet on.

Gear: cpu is Fx 6300, cpu cooler is 212 evo, Case is corsair carbide 200r and motherboard is ASrock 970 Extreme4.

That motherboard is a simple 4+1 VRM Phase motherboard, it is not meant for anything above average in terms of overclocking with an FX6 chip.  You would be lucky to get an FX8 to run stock without issues.  Likely your VRMs are throttling.  Try placing a fan directly over the VRMs, see if that helps.

I've used this board to overclock in the past. I was slightly disappointed in my gains. Was using an FX 4100 got from stock 3.6Ghz to 4.1Ghz on the same cooler; Hyper 212..Overclocking should be left to the 990FX series mobos IMO.

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module. Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_regulator_module ALSO http://cdn.overclock.net/a/a8/600x496px-LL-a86a7c49_heatsink.jpeg

Do you know what part of the case I should have my fan?

I have it on the top side currently.

I think it is top side that the vrm thingy is but I am not sure.

I guess with the 200R you can have fans on the top blowing into the case.

Even then, its not direct.  You need something blowing directly over that red highlighted area

I don't think I can do that.

Can I reach 4ghz without it?

It isn't even that much?

If you're adding voltage then yes. It does matter. This board has a rather simple and basic VRM design and you don't want that blowing on you.

Case: Define R4 (Black - Window) | PSU: EVGA Supernova 850w Gold | Motherboard: ASUS Z97 Deluxe | SSD: Samsung 840 EVO (250GB) | CPU: Intel i7 4790K (Devil's Canyon) Delidded with CLU  GPU: ASUS STRIX 980 TI | Cooler: Corsair H100i with CLU | Extra: NZXT Hue

If you can't get direct airflow on the VRMs, I would leave it at stock.  Not worth the risk of breaking something.  Who knows, they might even be getting pretty hot even at stock.  Try and get some air over the VRMs.  Have a fan hanging from some string if that is what it takes.

So you mean It's worth it even if I should tape it to the wall or something as long as I get it blowing there?

Should I try overclocking without change core then?

I had it on prime 95 for 1,5 hours and it had no warnings or error. I will try 1 League of Legends game with it soon it it's most demanding map and see if I have fps drops like I did last time I tried to overclock.

For a measly 100Mhz, I wouldn't mess with anything.  Just leave it at stock.  That is just my though.

It's not always on turbo but ok.

If this doesn't work I can leave it on stock.
