As much as I dislike Razer sometimes, their Vespula mouse mat was worth every penny

After using a hard one with a wrist rest and ruining old mice because I didn't have a mousepad (dirt got clogged in them) I can say that, yes, it is worth it.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I would say probably not; however, it's nice to have. I picked up a $7 steel series one and don't regret it. If anything, it's quieter than using the mouse directly on a desk.

I have an Optical mouse, and it doesn't track my desk at all so, yes I would say a mouse pad is worth it.

I cannot use mouse pads anymore, I always run out of space since I keep shifting positions in my seat and moving my mouse around.

Granted, I have a G500 using a laser sensor, so it tracks my desk just fine. :D

A mouse pad will make tracking more consistent (provided the pad is properly made without any fancy designs and/or colors) and saves your mouse's feet from wearing down too fast (although hard pads are not that much better in that aspect than using a naked desk top).
