I currently only have one monitor for my setup, an Acer S232HL, and was thinking of getting a second monitor. The one I currently have doesn't look that great. If I'm watching a movie on it and there's dark scenes (or doing anything with where there's black on my screen), the black isn't deep at all compared to something like my TV, or even my phone.

Right now I'm torn between 1080p and 1440p. I have a EVGA 760 SC w/ ACX which has 2GB of VRAM. I'd like a 1440p monitor, but my primary concern would be the performance impact it'd have in my games. I don't mind turning down the details a bit for the extra pixels, but I wouldn't want to turn them down too much (I'd be happy if it ran with high settings). On the other hand, if I get a 1080p monitor, then my performance won't be impacted at all because I plan to game only on one monitor, and use the other one just for productivity.

Would you say it's worth it to sacrifice the performance and get a 1440p monitor or should I just get a 1080p monitor? I'd rather get a 1080p monitor that have my performance impacted significantly by having a 1440p one.

Also, could you recommend any 1080p/1440p monitors that have G-Sync and pretty good color reproduction/contrast?

Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas! :)

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

The monitor you linked is a TN panel, so colour reproduction is going to be nothing comparable to an IPS panel. 1440p is more expensive and will require a better GPU to run games at high FPS.

A good 1080p IPS monitor at the moment is the Dell U2414H. It's probably around 200$ at this moment in time, although I'm European, so I don't know.

1080p is obsolete.

Jk, but seriously, higher resolutions are glorious and as long as you aren't planning to play only brand new AAA titles maxed out, you should be fine. I can near max out most of the games I play at 4k with an R9 270, though I play games like Assetto Corsa, War Thunder, Dirt 3, etc. Games like Tomb Raider and Metro 2033 I can play 1440p high but my fps is around 35-50 average, that doesn't bother me though for singleplayer.

I checked the price on Canada Computers, and you need to do an in-store special order to get it (which I don't mind) for $329. I'm not sure if they charge shipping on top of that though. I'd rather spend more money on a good monitor than get another bad one like the one I currently have. When I bought this one I had no idea what IPS, TN, and all the other panel types were unfortunately :(

Some of the more intense games I play are Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Battlefield 3, and 4, so I think those games' performance will probably be impacted the most. Would you say 1440p in general (productivity, gaming, movies, etc.) is a lot better than 1080p or is it a little overrated?

Honestly I'm not exactly sure because I haven't used a native 1440p monitor, I went from 1080p ---> 4k and the productivity side of things is much much better. Whenever I'm photo editing I can instantly tell whether or not something is in focus/sharp because the image is nearly unscaled in comparison (I use a 12mp camera, 4k is ~8.3mp), with 1080p I have to zoom in a ridiculous amount which takes a lot of time whenever you have 500+ photos to go through. 1440p has nearly twice as many pixels has 1080p so I'm sure it'll be much better as well.

Movies it doesn't really make a difference yet as there's really no 1440p/4k movies available from what I've seen. Youtube looks very similar in 1440p/4k as 1080p, presumably due to compression.
