OK, so I currently have a 500gb drive installed in my system, and have a 160gb laying around in case i really really would need the space immediately.

I am going to be gaining massive amounts of video data that i will need to keep semi safe soon atleast 500gb lined up so far and perhaps several Terabytes in the next year. SO, if i were to pick up another 500gb drive could i run it in raid or would i need a controller? as, well as do you think that its worth investing in 3tb drives or 1 tb drives atm and could i throw them in raid also? (Raid 1 or 5)

Also i've been looking into an SSD for quite some time and perhaps now is the time to do it as i can then use hdd's for dedicated video storage and the SSD for everything else. (any recommendations for a cheap good drive mx100 128gb maybe?)

Please help, I have NEVER had a storage problem before even when using only that 160gb drive for everything.

Oh, also have the raidmax super blade as a case

Why do you even want raid?

Just buy a bunch of 8TB HDDs and it will be enough.

Working with other peoples files so raid would be nice if its somewhat reasonably cost effective.

i probably only need 4tb of drive space still but i have 500gb atm so...thats a big jump and raid is something that sounds reasonable working with other peoples files.

Also been looking at the ssd as hdd/gpu is the bottleneck in my system atm

So how much money are you planning to spend on this?

$200 for 4TB of HDD?

or $2000 for 4TB of SSD?

well my first set of videos will net me between 800-1500$  so i'd like to spend half-ish of that to be future proof for several months atleast

@MeDownYou

Putting two 3TB drives in RAID1 will give you only 3TB total, and you said you needed 4TB.

The drives will work fine. As pretty much any identical pair of HDDs would.

Most motherboards can handle RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 nowadays, and with the exception of RAID5 (for which a good RAID controller is needed if you want fast write speeds) all at good speeds.

So check you motherboard. Maybe you need a controller, maybe you don't.

Also MX100 is fine for an SSD, although personally, I'd go for a ~250GB drive instead of a ~120GB, as the larger drives are usually faster, and ~250GB drives aren't all that expensive.
