Hey there Guitarists of the Forum! I'm having trouble trying to do Pre-bends on my guitar. Do you guys know anything that could help me or make it slightly easier? I think it's because my strings are pretty tough to bend. Also when I bend upwards (towards the sky/ceiling) I sometimes catch the string. You guys have any tips on getting around that?

Only reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to learn Paradise City and the Solos have quite a few Pre-bends.

Setup: i5 4670k @ 4.2 Ghz, Corsair H100i Cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB Ram @ 1600 Mhz, MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard, Corsair GS700 2013 edition PSU, MSI GTX 770 Lightning, Samsung EVO 120 SSD + 2TB&1TB Seagate Barracudas, BenQ XL2411T Monitor, Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones + AntLion ModMic 4.0

First you need to make sure that the action on your guitar isn't too high. The action means how tight towards the neck the strings are and are a major role for bends. For bends i usually grip the string with two fingers so i can grip it correctly. Hope this helped. Also paradise city is rather easy ;)

When I bend I used three fingers. It's just catching the string that really bugs me. I completely didn't know about the action xD

A quick Google told me how to change it. I didn't even know the cover that says my guitar brand/type was hiding something so important. This is what I get for not bothering to find out.

Play me the Outro Solo note for note and I'll throw money at you for being awesome ;) :P

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'your fingers catch the strings', but if you have weaker fingers, thinner strings will make bends easier. Other than that, using more than one finger is recommended and you might want to have only the tip of your thumb on the back of the neck. That's how I do bends anyway.

You know when you bend upwards the strings all sort of collect together. When I'm bending back down one of the strings that I has been pushed up because of the bend is played sometimes by hitting my finger. I may probably have fingers too thick/big for my strings or something.

Ah, okay. You gotta cut your nails as short as you can. And use the very tips of your fingers so the smallest amount is over the edge of the string (edge towards the cieling)

Two things you can try:

1 - Get thicker gauge strings. These are heavier to bend, but they don't need bending that far to get the same pitch. You could also use two fingers to do a bend if they are to hard

2 - Bend the string over two frets so that more of the string is bent up, That way, you shouldn't need to bend it as far either
