Is the extra cash for a GTX GPU worth it for shadowplay? is a 4core  CPU like a i5 not worthy for streaming? Is it a better idea to just get a capturecard to stream? Does hangout on air use less CPU/GPU power equaling less performance hit for your gaming? My main questions for streaming! Thought you smart people know more than I do.

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

Using the CPU to stream is better than a capture card. However you'll need a good cpu like the 5820K to stream at 1080 30fps or 720p60fps. Gpus don't really help but you'll need a good gpu to keep the game running at the streamed fps (peeferably higher) so that your stream does not look choppy.

I was afraid i was going to have to spend an extra $100 for a i7 to stream. What performance hit will I get if i try to stream with a i5 4460 or similiar?

Depends on what you want to stream. But an i5 is pretty low end in terms of streaming so you'd be "stuck" with 480p30fps IMO if you yourself want to have a good gaming experience while not dropping frames.

I spend months finding the right parts for a sub $600 machine for streaming, and....... It won't even stream if I build it.

Well thanks for the help! I guess I will be saving up another 100-200.

I'd like to let you know that the xeon 1231 v3 is "just" 240$ but has 4 cores + hyperthreading like an i7 so if you could save up for that it would offer a much better streaming experience than any i5.

PS the PCPP link is broken.

Is it though? Whats wrong with using a capturecard?  And the partslist is a general idea of what I am thinking. Most likely a few new or cheaper parts will come out by the time I am ready to start actually building. I was just bored one day, so decided to make a reachable goal. I get more motivated If I see exactly what I am trying to save up for :D

Not trying to threadjack (sorry OP), but you've got me wondering about my CPU on my new rig I'm building soon after you said acceptable quality would require the likes of a 5820K. Would an i7 4790K be fine for acceptable streaming quality?

Since streaming is pretty CPU intensive, have you considered AMD 8 core CPUs?

What about amd fx 8xxx?

I also dont see the point in streaming if youre not a yt celebrity like pewdiepie. You dont get anything for streaming except for thet "i feel like a pro" feel but isnt enought to justify the extra hardware requirements

For me it was :P

Pretty outdated architecture which will not perform well in single and dual threaded games, which are the most popular. I owned an 8350 before my 5820K and i was dropping A LOT of frames  even at 480p60fps.

A capture card adds additional "lag" (although not much at all) and isn't capable to stream at the best of settings. Don't forget that a capture card is just good for capturing and offloading streaming "work" from the CPU (which can also be done by just offloading some to the GPU, no noticable performance hit for me), however with a better CPU games run better which kind of negates the effect of a capture card. AND a GOOD capture card is about $90-130 (don't forget that), so really there is NO benefit to a capture card unless you want to stream from a console.

PS You will want to set your encoding to H264 (if your GPU supports it, or select your capture card if you decide to go that way).

a lot of miss-information here...yes you can use shadow play to stream using GPU accelerated and also if you go with an intel i5 cpu you can use the integrated HD4600 IGPU to stream using H264 encoding.

will it lessen the performance hit?

I have, but everytime I ask for advice. Just to make sure I am not spending money where I don't need to. The fanboys sweep in, and won't even think about why I am going AMD, what I am doing with it. automatically "AMD sucks, go intel" So I finally caved because nobody would actually give me a dang answer. So I am trying to go intel. So if you are a intel fanboy, STOP IT!! Everything has a purpose.

Uh.... Cuz I enjoy doing youtube, and streaming! I don't care If I have 5 people watching, or 5mil watching. I enjoy streaming, and doing youtube so I do it. and getting a more powerful CPU isn't a bad idea. it will help with 3d rendering, video editing, animation, and all dat stuff! So other than cost theres no reason not to get a higher powered CPU.

i5 4460 + QuickSync will be very low performance overhead.

Alternatively both AMD and Nvidia offer GPU accelerated streaming (Shadowplay/VCE) but I think shadowplay is probably better.

How much better? Because I can get alot more performance from AMD than I can with nvidia, for the same amount of cash.

I couldn't tell you exactly but I see a lot more shadowplay news/improvements coming out.

You could use OpenCL on amd cards though, should work well enough- that's how I stream locally.
