afaik the only big difference is the design of them and since ubuntu is the most used it also has a lot of information on how to do things. i would say for the beginning pick a ubuntu based distro you like the design of until you get the hang out how things work in linux and then change if you want.

The main difference  that i've noticed is that ubuntu is really good as a first time distro. The main site has pretty much all the info you could ever need.

Run virtualbox and test them out^^

Ubuntu holds your hand. I consider it to be "Linux for Windows users". Debian is simple, holds your hand a lot less and is rock solid. Fedora is in some ways similar to Debian but it is more bleeding edge. Software is quick to get updates in Fedora. Of the three, Fedora is my favorite and the one I recommend to most people just starting out.

Ubuntu is based off of Debian. Fedora is not. Ubuntu is the more newbie friendly distribution. I personally think it's all around easier to use than other distributions. If you were to ask me my opinion I would go with Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS. It's package manager and what not is easy to grasp. You can find a couple of guides I made here and here to help you along the way if you so choose to try it.
