Hi,

After a lot of research i have narrowed down my build options to 3. It's basically the same build but i'm not sure which processor would be better vs cost. I'm looking for a solid stable machine for video editing:

I personally think you'd be fine with a i7 4790K Z97-based build myself. That's what I'm going for and I actually do a lot of video editing.

What video editor do you use by the way?

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Pretty much, maybe a bit of gaming but that's very secondary

Which Video Editing Software will you be using? What is your usual file size? What resolution will you be working at? How many monitors do you need to use? Do you plan to play games on this machine?

Adobe premiere. Will be using 2 monitors and I'd like to work at up to 4K but not mandatory for the time being. Games are not a big factor for me in this build.

Sorry, misread your question. I "plan" on using adobe premiere.

I will be able to tell you in a few months ;)

Yea i've considered it, but as i see it i could get a better machine for less money...disagree?

i agree but , with this machine you have also the con that is a 5k display all in one machine and when you have free time you can upgrade to a high ram capacity

Since you will be using it for work ... i assure you , you will be fine

Are you a professional, a youtuber or a hobbyist?

For working on 4K RAW this build is grossly inadequate. If you are not a professional then working with your choice of E3 Xeon is alright otherwise do consider investing in an E5, minimum 32 GB of ECC memory and good amount of SSD(fast storage). Thunderbolt will prove useful for quick transfer of data. I would suggest to not buy into a SLI configuration. Either purchase a single 980 or equally priced Quadro and upgrade to SLI when need arises.

No, i am not a professionnal and won't be editing 4K RAW. Thanks for the advice, i might just buy a single gpu. So you would choose the xeon over the 6 core I7 processor?

You have a valid point, but i still see myself paying 20% more just for the apple logo....those are nice machines though, i do agree.

E3 xeon will serve you well and last a long time, a single GPU is the most hassle free solution as it works out of the box with most photo/ video editing programs with minimal tweaking involved. 6 core processors are great but if you are not a professional then saving 10-20 minutes hardly matters.

Windows 8.1 and the upcoming Windows 10 should be the only Windows you are looking at.

Mac can be an alternative as some Mac software are much cheaper(Final Cut Pro); but if you want an Adobe software, stick to Windows.

Would the stock 5K iMac really be sufficient?

Stock 5K iMac will be sufficient for a normal load of video editing.

They do not need it, but if you live in a warm place a 212X will definitely improve temperature.

The imac 5k is great! if you go with the imac do not upgrade the ram -- you can upgrade it later on

also if you want a build with that kind of money , i can make one and post it

Yes the xeon needs ab aftermarket cooler

Does the xeon processor need a aftermarket cpu cooler?

Not really. The part in the OP includes an Intel stock cooler. Will do a good, but not spectacular job.

If you are going with LGA1150 go with the i7-4790K, not the Xeon. The i7 has a significantly higher base clock and can be overclocked.

If you are not gaming, a single GTX 980 might be a better choice. If memory serves multiple gpu are only used in Premier during export, not playback.

I would suggest a less expensive motherboard and an air tower cpu cooler.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

So no advantages for the Xeon vs the 4790K? Which motherboard/cooler would you suggest?

Xeon's have a slight advantage handling memory. Otherwise the V3 are 4 hyperthreaded Haswell cores. Just like the i7. The 600MHz higher base clock of the i7-4790K will mean much better performance. And, since it can be overclocked the advantage can be even larger.

Unless you want to push overclocking to the chip's limits I would suggest a motherboard like the Asus Z97-A, Z97-Pro, Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2, or Maximus VII Hero.

The Thor V2 case is not really designed with AIO in mind. I would suggest an air cooler like the Noctua NH-U12S or NH-D14.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
