I wasn't even aware they still sold the plus.  I can't even get the EVO anymore - it's either 'out of stock' or 'discontinued' according to my online retailers - I have to chip in the extra $5 and get the newer 212X for my build now.

But yeah each one is slightly new and better than the last - there's not a huge difference in performance, all of them are still the best bang for your buck air cooler on the market.

ok i was just wandering because on the pc part picker site the 212 plus is $19.99 vs the 212 EVO is $29.99 which isnt a big difference but when your looking to maximize performance on a budget $10 is quiet a bit

Looking at the specs between the two there doesnt seem to be any real noticeable difference except the EVO seems just a tad bit quieter. Can anyone tell me if im missing something other than a minor noise difference.

they just needed a rebrand mate, products can not live on a market for more than a couple of years and be sold like hot cakes, bose companions are best examples for that.

If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.

I thought the EVO had more copper for the base or something than the PLUS? Dunno, they should all still perform within margins of each other, right?

Probably.  If you compared the PLUS and the X, you might see something, but between the PLUS and the EVO, or the EVO and the X, I'd say there isn't much more than a couple of degrees and slightly different noise levels.  Can't say anything for sure, but that's what I'm assuming.

You are correct. When I chose my plus (which was 10 dollars cheaper) I was going back and forth for whichever is cheaper. You will only notice a 2-3 C difference from the two. The fans might be better but slapping on high quality fans will not make it a better cooler ( I tried with multiple fan setups) from push pull to single push and single pulls. The only  upgrade is quieter fans.

I have worked with both and the biggest difference is the actual base. The EVO's base is pretty much solid copper and flat, whereas the Plus's base isn't completely flat, and has a lot less copper.

I see i didnt even notice that. I only reason I wanted to make sure is because I do plan to go water cooled within 6-8 months of building but I wont have the cash to do it right away so you can pretty much say im trying to cut as many corners as i can to save cash and i figured the cooler would be a good start as long as the alternative cooler would still perform well for a 4.0-4.1ghz overclock on a i5-4690k until i can afford $250-300 to do a custom cooling loop of my own. I do intend to overclock farther after i build my loop the other is just for starters while i save the cash to allow me to go a little more extreme. Because honestly i hate the look of a air cooler it takes away from the look of the other components themselves especially since I am going with a white/black theme.

This is the build i am planning to go with.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($219.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($119.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card  ($329.99 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($69.96 @ Directron)
Monitor: Asus VX228H 60Hz 21.5" Monitor  ($129.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1232.06

Since the NZXT S340 has all that room in the front of the case i figured that would allow for a nice custom loop to fit in there along with a single rad in the front positioned vertically as well.

If your going to be replacing it that quickly, I would just pick up the 212+ if you still can. It will perform within just a few degrees of the Evo. I would honestly be surprised to see a difference of more than 1-2°C. It should handle what you wanna do perfectly fine until you get your watercooling in place.

Awesome. Yea i have a list of upgrades I will be making within that first 6 months and after they are all in place I plan to do the water cooling. I just want the other stuff first so that I can have the build as it will be for the next 3-5 years prior to adding in the cooling loop.

First 6 months upgrades list.

a second GTX 970( or 960 if it releases with 3/4 gb of vram since it will more than likely be about $75-100 cheaper.)

2 additional monitors

triple monitor stand

8 more gigs of ram

another 240gb of SSD

and finally a backlit mechanical keyboard.

Then after all that is done i plan to water cool it and that build i posted above i have an i7-4790k version of the same build that is only going to cost about $60 more so i might end up going with the i7 to start with anyways since i will be doing content creation as apart of my college degree for a bachelors in video game design and development.
