Super Hot (i7 4790k)

Hey guys. Its been awhile since i was last on here.

 

So my i7 is crazy hot right now. I built the system a couple months ago and was seeing average temps running Aida64. Im cooling with an H220 and max i was seeing was about 67c. idling was around 22c. Totally normal

 

Everything was fine then the other day i loaded up Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 (great game) and ended up overdrawing my UPS. Infact the UPS started the alarm, cut off power from the wall and i drained my backup battery. 

 

I plugged my desktop into the wall and started it back up and got a 'CPU overheat error' during post.

 

got into windows and checked temps and they were at about 95c. now after browsing craigslist im at 115c. Obviously this must be a fluke

 

For the record i chalked all the heat up to a potentially broken pump on my H220 so i swapped out thermal paste to see if MAYBE that was the issue. Reinstalled the cooler and nothing. still hot as hell.

so i broke out the old stock heatsink. installed that and still hot as hell. 

 

So now i think its either a bust CPU or my probes are wonky. 

 

Any ideas?

 

For the record, SGW2 was the first actually intensive game ive played on this build

 

 

TL;DR

CPU is crazy hot (120c max, program cant read any higher). used stock heatsink and H220 and changed thermal paste 3 times. no results.

Try turning on the system and seeing if you can hear running water in the AIO

well i did and my situation was exactly same not regretting it. (AND I have to mount a hyper212)

ive tried that and havent necessarily heard anything but that doesnt explain why the stock heatsink doesnt fix the issue

you could always try delidding and adding some thermal paste under the hood

Did something stupid happen in the bios? (how much voltage is the cpu using)

 

Does the cpu feel VERY hot? If it's actually at 120c, then the heatsink/cpu/cpu block should feel abnormally warm.

well i did and my situation was exactly same not regretting it. (AND I have to mount a hyper212)

 but my temps were fine when i first got it. the one thing that scares me more than anything is taking a razor blade to a $350 investment

thats what i thought. maybe the bios is fucky. but i went in and reset everything and set all fans on max and still nothing. Its in the NCASE M1 so everything is packed in there and everything is always warm however the pump block is warm but i wouldnt say its crazy hot.

It sounds like a malfunctioning sensor then 

 

What exactly are your temps like? 

Immediately after power on? After idling for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes...

Thats what im thinking. Is the sensor based off the chip or the socket? i cant remember

TIM on the core die dries off, in my case it was 11 months and my temps increased like 20c in 11 months

 right but 20c over my avg of ~70c max is still only 90c. and my chip is maybe 5 months old. I doubt 120c+ is due to bad TIM

thermal sensor only reads up to 105c after that you won't get to 106c because your pc would be shut down, where are you getting this 120c reading from? which app and which sensor?

try using a laser heat sensor to measure the heat of the heatsink

i dont have a laser sensor but i used a thermometer and it capped out at about 50c. so it could be hotter for all i know

Theres no way your chip would even operate anywhere past 100c.

I would try updating your bios roll it back if you have to. Re seat your air cooler. Don't use your h220 until your problem is solved.

that was my next plan of attack. BIOS update. Im using the Impact VII.

I had two yes 2 swiftech h220 pumps fail on me. the second one is currently at swiftech. they said they dont have any new units left to replace it with, instead they are going to repair it lofl.

 

i even offered to pay the difference on a h220x to no avail........

 

great performance... reliability is questionable.

That's a shit CPU. Gets high temperature and low clocks(You can't really push this CPU to even 4.7 Ghz).

clock speeds dont mean better performance. its a pretty damn good CPU

its a baller chip. but the binning process might be questionable.

 

these chips are designed to operate at 4.4GHz. it will only hit 4.4GHz (on all cores) automatically with xmp enabled. xmp is technically overclocking and as we know overclocking is not officially supported lol

 

makes me wonder if intel validates 4.4ghz on the stock coolers. when you enable xmp and get 4.4ghz your chip will automatically run somewhere between 1.225V and 1.3V. even at 1.275V thats a fair amount of heat to dissipate from a haswell core on a stock cooling solution. mind you the new thermal interface material is pretty good IMO and we are seeing reasonable temps for the most part. unless your one of those people that didnt mount the h100i properly hehe.

 

still with a baseclock of 4.0ghz thats still pretty good even with a stock cooler.
