Hi,

So about a week ago I have built my first rig. And after a week of use I'm guessing the GPU fried. I think like that because I got the GPU out the PC start with it, it would not start AT ALL. I'm using the computer that had the fried GPU, well instead of that it runs on the integrated GPU. So, my question is why did it die ? At the time of the accident I was playing GTA IV which is not a very demanding game (I know it is apoor port from XBOX 360) .

Here is my build :

If anyone could suggest why and what go wrong I would be very happy :)Thank you for the help in advance and have some better then my Holidays

P.S I forgot to add the Case its  XPREDATOR X1 BLACK EDITION ( I just don't think that has anything to do with it and I'm kind sad and frustrated about the hole accident )

What do you mean it "fired"?

Did it explode and sparks and smoke come out everywhere?

Because if it didnt, then it did not fry.

I saw smoke is that enough ?

Well then you have some serious issues with your PC...

First of all, find which part of the 970 fried by looking at the PCB. Was it near the PCIe connector? Near the power cables?

Also make sure you plugged the right GPU PCI power cables, not a CPU 8-pin EPS cable.

Then RMA the 970 soy ou get a working one for free.

Next make sure that you have a high quality power supply and will not damage your components.

  1. I just checked the GPU and there is no visible damage to it. When I tried to turn in on  ( The PC with the GTX 970 smoke came out from the port the one you use to connect monitor)
  2. Um, can you say the same but with words that dummies would understand ? :)
  3. Yeah, I was thinking about that. And that's why on not taking of the cover and etc.
  4. Is the PSU I have chosen is bad quality ?

Your PSU looks fine, and it worked with your previous GPU? Or is this a new Build?

There are two types of cables from PSUs that look the same. One is 6+2 pin PCIe and the other is 8 pin EPS. You can fry your GPU by plugging an EPS cable into it, but that would fry it instantly not leave it working for a week.

The fact that smoke came out of the back is weird...idk what would cause that.

Do you have any other GPUs to test your PSU with? It could be a defective PSU...and that would mean that it would also fry your second 970...

  1. This a completely new build it was an upgrade from my ~6 year old potato.
  2. It wasn't me who put the PC together and I remember that they hooked up all the cables correctly.
  3. I have no other GPU to test it, well I have but its so old it does not need any cables hooked to it at all.
  4. Maybe I should pick up other PSU  ?

So I should get it replaced by the shop I bought it form, shouldn't I ?

I would recommend switching your PSU just to be safe so that you dont damage the new 970 that you get.

It would suck if the second 970 also fried because of the PSU and then they wouldnt allow a second RMA...

No, 650W is more than enough for a 970.

What is important is that you get one from a good manufactuter like EVGA, Corsair, or seasonic, and that it has a good 80+ rating.

Better than Bronze rating ?

Higher 80+ rating generally means higher quality components, so if you can afford it try to get an 80+ gold PSU that is about 500-650W
