Really not sure which section would be best for this. I was browsing youtube the other day when a file named f.txt automatically downloaded. From google searches I believe the file name is really f.txt.js . I deleted the file before I enabled show hidden extensions so I am not sure if this is the case. I scanned the file with kaspersky, and the computer with kaspersky, malwarebytes anti-malware free, and windows defender. Nothing showed up in any of these scans. Has anyone here had any similar experiences, it seems to have downloaded from a potentially malicious ad. Since then I have installed ad-block to prevent this from happening again, but I would like to remove it ASAP to continue supporting websites, youtubers, etc.

This has never happened to me.

I have a setting 'Ask where to save each file before downloading' option, under Download location.

Do you have that (un)ticked?

After it downloaded I ticked the box, but it was previously unticked.

Its hardly from adsense or any other google ad. Were some other tabs open at same time?

Possibly, but I believe it was only youtube tabs.

Go to your chrome downloads (Chrome://downloads in your URL bar) and see what URL it was downloaded from (the server)

Well, no way you're gonna know where you got it from unless you contact the NSA for some of your browsing history jk

It probably was a one time thing, from a sketchy site which was open at the same time as YouTube or a sketchy Google Ad (Which I doubt)

You have their phone number so I can call them?

So I probably shouldn't be worried about any repercussions of this incident? That is what I was thinking from the beginning, but I like to play it safe. Re-imaging is such a PITA, so I really don't want to.
