I just got my g751 today and I'm trying to migrate the old HDD to the ssd I'm putting in it. The old drive is partitioned into a system and data drive with other random shit I don't want partitioned. How do I just copy the system partition and format the drive?

Edit: The original is 1TB partitioned 4 ways and what I wan't to do is just clone the system stuff, as it is a fresh OS, onto a 240GB ssd

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

Can you connect your SSD to the system, with your current drive still in it? If so Windows gives each partition a drive letter therefore, you should be able to use your normal SSD migration utility to copy over your C: drive (or whatever you system partition is) and only get the system partitions data.

for some reason Acronus see's only physical disks rather than individual partitions

Don't migrate or clone HDDs to an SSD.

You're going to end up with so many system issues that you will have to do a full reinstall within the next few years, maybe months.

First format the SSD and make sure your motheboards is on AHCI.

Then install windows to the SSD and make any partitions you need.

Then plug your old HDD into the system and use windows explorer to move your files to the SSD partitions, or wherever you want those files.

When you're done, format and overwrite the HDD to make it completely clean. Now you can use it as a mass storage device ;)

its a laptop so I don't have an activation code for when I install Windows

edit: also what makes cloning bad?

You could always try Intel's utility (Link) last time I used it it worked great didnt have any problems on my G74SX, although I didn't have a partitioned drive. (Edit: This may only work for Intel SSD's now)

I was using this, I guess my question now is how do you delete partitions like "recovery" that don't have the option to be deleted in the disk management

I think there are tools that you can use to retrieve the code that was used to activate your windows, just google it.

Cloning basically tried to duplicate everything from one drive to another, but the problem is that hard drives are different from SSDs, in basically every way.

I'm sure if its just cloning programs not being good, or that fact that operating systems are sensitive to being moved, but what I do know is that there are plenty of people coming to the forum every week with OS issues such as hangs, disk usage spikes, BSODs, system slow downs, slow SSD speeds, and all kinds of problems.

The best way to avoid all these issues is to take the time and effort to do a proper clean install from the beginning, which will speed up your PC a lot as well get rid of all the junk on your OS from years of installing and uninstalling programs.
