EVGA 1200-P2

Go to solution Solved by Najuno,

Thanks everybody for answering my thread here and participating in helping me to decide.

I got an awesome deal on my EVGA 1200-P2 that I just bought last night at MicroCenter. The PSU is the perfect fit for my needs and first impression are very good. Cables are a bit stiff TBH but it wasn´t impossible to route them. The PSU is exactly what I was looking for to cover all my OC needs and looks.

Hey guys,

so I´m sorting out my Corsair AX860 PSU these days and I´m looking for something that´s not just delivers more power but also satisfies my high demands in quality. A good PSU is always where everything starts and since I´m upgrading so frequently my hardware I kind of limited myself a bit mit the AX860 and that PSU is never an option for 3 way GPU setups.

I´m planning to buy an EVGA 1200-P2. Does anybody have personal experience with the latest EVGA P series? I´ve been reading lots of reviews, but I found it nice if somebody has one of them on their own and would share some impressions, like cable flexibility, feel, noise...

Why do you need 1200w?

I want to have a power house for any 3 way solution I throw at it.

As of right now my system has a peak load of 641Watts. If I´m doing the math correctly with a third card, and that counts just for the GM204, I´d end up around 900Watts, and it´s better not to push a PSU always to its limits. The AX860 is a good PSU but I need something that gives me possibilities beyond a 2way CF/SLI. I do a lot of pretty hard OCing under water and run (usually) 2 custom water cooled loops (not with the GTX980, because they´re no highend chip). And I´ve read many positive things about the P series from EVGA. But it´s always better to gather as much info as you can :) .

What could anyone need 1200w for? Dual r9 295x is the only thing I can think of. So much heat......Super flower's designs with EVGA are probably the best on the market right now. You really can't go wrong considering the pricing is almost always cheaper than competitors of the roughly the same quality. 10 year warranties help.

All my parts in this PC are highend and when I bought the AX860 I had no intensions to go beyond 2way SLI because of the many scaling and micro stuttering issues with GPUs. But I´m running an enthusiast built and OC very hard and I like to have a strong reserve.

The 1600 would be an overkill even for a 4 way CF/SLI but I understand why people buy it. It´s not only about what you can possibly draw out of it, it´s more a decent safety factor. And as a OCer I want to make sure that my base is perfectly set. We don´t know what nVidia or AMD will bring to the table but that I cheaped out for a 2way instead of a 3way SLI with the GTX980 will not happen again with the next highend series.

At most get a 1000w p2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438013&cm_re=1000w_p2-_-17-438-013-_-Product 190 after rebate is a steal for a 1000w platinum of insane quality like that. 2 way 980's at stock on a 5930k only draws 370w while gaming. (testing done by linus in his sli performance scaling video) So really even a 600w will get the job done with massive overclocks. Personally you would be nuts not to hang on to your current psu because it's more than enough and it's quality can't be easily bested. But if you must, there is your best option. 1000w p2. Crazy guy.

I can show you that my GTX980 2way SLI with my i7 5930K OCed balls to the wall draw 641W Peak. Adding another card will put me around 870-880Watts. So the AX860 isn´t an option and 1000Watts... well I don´t really live of a budget so the step to the 1200W P2 is the better option for me.

And the near future will show what AMD and nVidia will bring to daylight with their next highend cards. And if they are as efficient as announced the 1200-P2 will never hurt me.

EDIT: TBH thanks for posting the pic but I will believe what I see through my Kill-A-Watt on my own system ;) . If you do the math this can´t be right. For my CPU alone is a 140W TDP CPU and I tell you one thing when I OC mine as far as possible it is beyond 100W. So it´s unlikely that a 2 way GTX980 SLI with CPU, watercooling pump, all fans, drives just uses 370 Watts max. My system draws in idle already 125W oow.

I think you misunderstand here a little detail :). I am not talking about an ingame powerdraw. I am talking here about a peak load OCed as far as possible in synthetic benchmarks. The only reason why I buy that stuff is most likely benchmarking for 3D Mark and Cinebench. Of course your overall load in games will be lower, no doubt about it, but even in games, especially when OCed you´ll get peaks. Linus´ video doesn´t cover that.

Money isn't really an issue :) . But the EVGA 1200-P2 scored better JonnyGuru's test just by a notch :) .

The Antec only lost half a point because of the manual, otherwise it would be a perfect 10. They are both exceptional units.

I would say that Delta are one of the best, even better than the likes of Seasonic and Superflower.

You won't go wrong with either though so whichever you choose is a good decision.

Clear victory. There are no competitors though I question your reasons for a 1200W PSU.

There is no clear victory. If you are comparing oem's then Delta is superior to Superflower. Not by a huge amount, but they are still better.

Also if you read most of Jonnyguru reviews He usually compares the soldering quality against 'Delta' standards.

Knocking half a point off for the manual isn't a true reflection of the overall score.

Taken from the Antec review: If you were expecting bad soldering, get used to disappointment. This is Delta we're talking about, here. It doesn't get any better than this.

Taken from the Superflower (EVGA) review: Super Flower's soldering isn't the best in the world, but it's good enough that I don't think I'll pull points at all

I just got one about a month ago to run my 5930K plus CF 290X lightning cards, it doesn't add any noticeable noise to the system and it's been able to handle everything I throw at it, even with everything liquid cooled and OC'd. I'd recommend it a million times over, also EVGA sells individually sleeved cable kits if you'd like that.
