i dont know exactly what it is but it is greater then hd and ddr4 was really important in this build

DDR4 is completely inconsequential in any gaming build. The only possible place DDR4 could make an impact would be an APU build, and APU's aren't on DDR4, or advised for even middle of the road gaming quality.

If you want 6c/12t go with the 5820k or 5930k and 2 or 3-way SLI, although 3-way SLI scaling is horrendous and really not worth it at all.

i would LOVE to build a similar one for myself and i think i actualy might in a near future...for 1440p gaming.

if he really feels to burn more money onto a gaming rig upgrade the two gpu's for GTX 980 should satisfy his need for spending more...but the performance boost he would get from doing so is not worth it unfortunately.

ill show this to him and see what he thinks

DDR4 and X99 won't help his gaming performance for at least a good 3 or 4 years from now...this machine will maxout any games for the foreseable future on ultra settings, he will upgrade the GPU's once or twice before needing a replacement on the memory/board and ram.

Also this was added to my post just after you've quoted it so i paste again just so you know:

please note i DID NOT included the mail in rebates so he could save about 80$ filling them out and sending them if he feels like it...

there is a 35$ rebate on the PSU and another 25$ on the cpu cooler that would be worth filling up at the very least...

RAM speed won't affect gaming performance when using a dedicated graphics card the difference is within margin of error...it's absolutely not worth the price except for a workstation machine...not a gaming rig...same goes for the extra CPU cores...i can still suggest a build based on X99 but it's money in the wind for gaming...you want me to adjust for x99?

on that kind of budget you could have Pcper's streaming server with 40 threads of insanity.

6 cores 12 threads beast of a CPU...asus X99 deluxe motherboard which is absolutely terrific and 4x4GB of DDR4 RAM for quad-channel memory performance...

oh and since he is buying 2 gtx970 he gets to choose between Farcry4, assassin's creed unity and the crew with each cards so he can pick two of these games.

I think its more just general consensus from various gaming communities. extensive tests done with DDR3 already show that encryption/decryption and some graphics/cpu benchmarks get better results with faster frequency Ram, but gaming shows little improvement.

One reason for this may be that a pci-e 3.0 16x slot can theoretically transfer almost 16GB/s of data, while the lowest frequency of DDR4 Ram available exceeds that bandwidth already (Unless you only have a single stick of Ram installed...). If its just the cpu using the Ram for itself, obviously this is not the case. but if data is being transferred between the system memory and Graphic memory, you are limited to the bandwidth of pci-e 3.0 16x at best.

Z97 > X99 for gaming. Faster core speed is more important than the number of cores. Maybe in the future a 6 core will be more relevant, but by then better cpu's will be out anyway.

So if it is purely a gaming pc then I would go with Z97.

real cores do increase performance much better than hyper-threading, but I agree that z97 is probably enough for now. I know for a fact though that my i5 at 4.7Ghz is holding back my crossfire setup, oh how I wish I went with an i7 lol.  :(

there's some typo's in the graph lol
