So do I need to run two displayport cables from each gpu to my monitor to run sli?

No you connect the cards with the SLI bridge internally and then go from card #1 with your cable as usual into your monitor.

No you don't, multi-GPU technology (SLI for Nvidia, CrossfireX for AMD) employs the first GPU as "master" and any additional GPUs as "slaves".

The master GPU is the one connected to the monitor and is the one that coordinates and communicates with the rest of the "slave" GPUs in the multi-GPU setup.

You only need to connect one graphics card to your monitor.

On a side note, if you're using two Nvidia GPUs make sure to use a single SLI bridge, if you're using more than two make sure to use two SLI bridges.

I forgot to mention this as well this only applies as long as you don´t SLI and use a nVidia Surround then you will still have to bridge the cards with your SLI bridge but the cable stuff to the monitors change. But don´t worry 1 monitor or even more monitors are fine in card number one as 'master' described as long as you just game on one.
