Hey all,

I've been running into a problem with my computer restarting and I can't figure out why and was hoping someone had an idea that I haven't yet. My computer will restart without any BSOD regardless what I'm doing. I've had it restart in the middle of a game, watching youtube, or just on Facebook. The time between restarts can range from 5 minutes to several days. Temperatures for both my CPU and GPU never go over 50c. As far as I can remember, I didn't install any new hardware or software around the time the restarts started to occur.

Things I have tried:

Lowered my cpu overclock from 4.4GHz to 4.3GHz (I had the 4.4 overclock for almost a year so I didn't think that was the problem)

removed extra HDD

removed soundcard

Changed Nvidia power management mode to 'Prefer maximum performance'

Updated

Things I'm going to try (In no particular order):

Disabling my GPU (I have a custom loop and there's no way I'm gonna actually take it out)

run Windows 7 repair disk

remove extra SSD

remove CPU overclock

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. I'm seriously stumped with this since I can't figure out what triggers the restart. I seriously thought that bumping down the CPU overclock worked since it hadn't crashed for 2 days now, but apparently that didn't work. I'm going to attempt finding my Windows 7 disk now. Even if you don't have an idea what the problem is, thanks for reading :).

Computer Specs:

Asus P8Z77-M MATX Motherboard

i5-2500k 4.3GHz

Nvidia GTX670

8GB 1600MHz Corsair RAM

128GB Crucial SSD

64GB Crucial SSD (OS)

320GB HDD

Seasonic X750

Windows 7

Any malware detected on your system? Run a security test (from your anti virus software)

What are the temps? Is something overheating?

The things you plan to do all have a 0.0001% of working, the windows repair might work though i don't know what the problem is.

Check event log if any errors occured

Your PSU could also be causing you a problem, how old is it?

It's roughly 2.5 years old. I ran Intel Burn Test and Furmark to try to really draw some power out of it, and my computer didn't restart during the roughly 30 minutes that I had those running. I am also wonder if my PSU could be the problem, but Seasonic's X series power supplies are really good and I wouldn't expect a PSU with a 7 year warranty to crap out so soon. I do have an old Rosewill PSU I could test out, but I was hoping to never have to use that again :P

No malware detected and even when everything is at full load I don't go above 50c on my CPU or GPU (The crash happens even when idling though)

How would I go about checking event logs?

Edit: I don't see anything out of the ordinary with the event log. I have errors under Boot, Standby, and Shutdown Performance Monitoring (ID 100, 301, and 201 respectively).

I do see a critical level event but that's also a boot performance monitor (ID 100) event and I've definitely had more than just 1 crash in the past week+. All other warnings are pretty much the same thing with Standby Performance Montoring and Desktop Window Manage Monitoring.

Thank you both for your replies. This has been driving me nuts.

I can imagine its driving you nuts.

Here is a 5 minute youtube guide on how to use event viewer:

Thanks. I updated my reply to you since I googled how to get to the event viewer. I'm going to watch the video real quick though just to make sure I'm looking in the right area.

Memory Testing....is where I'd be looking.

Single sticks or both, make sure their not the culprit.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Definately recommend the same thing SkikledRebuilds recommended.

Try Memtest86. And maybe post a picture from the result in your next reply.

Also when was the last time you (re)installed windows? Sometimes it realy is nice to just install windows clean again.

I had alot of issues too , blue screens , random restarts, etc. Couldn't find the solution, so thought fuck this and deleted everything.

I don't say you have too for now, but think about it. Make a backup from the files you need to keep on a disc or usb drive before doing it though.

I'm gonna try Memtest86 in a moment. I had to find a USB drive to actually boot it from. It hasn't been too long since I last re-installed Windows; maybe a year and a half at most? I normally re install windows every year or two but I don't want to re-install it just to find out it was a hardware problem.

Edit: How long does everyone think I should run it for? I know that ideally the longer the better (Isn't it something crazy like 12-24 hours what's needed to be 99% sure there isn't a problem? I don't know why I have that thought in my head.)

As a status update it has done 4 passes with no errors. I plan on leaving it running overnight just to be as sure as possible.

Are we thinking that the next step would be reinstalling Windows? I''m pretty busy until Christmas so I probably won't have time do that yet so any other things people can think of that don't require a ton of time is appreciated.

Edit: I stopped running memtest after it passed 11 times without an error.

I am truly sorry that i can't find any other issue.

When even event viewer does not see any errors, then my suggestion would be formatting the hdd's and secure erasing the ssd's.

Also look for firmware updates for your ssd drive and install them after a secure erase.

Finally reset your UEFI settings, and begin installing windows.

For your general programs use ninite, just to save a couple of minutes.

No worries, I just appreciate the feedback. I can normally solve these problems without too much trouble, so it's kind of nice to see everyone else stumped as odd as that might sound. I'll probably just reformat everything once I have some spare time.

mutible things can cause this sadly enough, you should check these for yourself so far you can.

malware,

heat,

voltage (psu),

and as other people said, if the event viewer doesnt show stuff then there is or something just wrong and a new install might solve stuff
