Need more storage for my plex server

Go to solution Solved by ShadowCaptain,

Will plex run on one of the free solutions, and do these os's support hotswapping?

PLEX runs on anything, Linux, Freenas, IOS :P etc haha, im not sure about hotswapping, personally not bothered about it so I never looked into it

I believe they all can do though, but dont quote me

I run a plex server off of my desktop in my room. I have a two terabyte hard drive that I store all my content on. This isn't really a great solution, as it doesn't provide me any backup for my data, and It is also sometimes slow because the hdd isn't server grade(it likes to stop spinning and takes awhile to start up again). I was looking into a network attatched storage device. I don't know how much storage I will need but I want at least 5 TB's. I also don't know if I want to go with a pre-built solution, or build my own. If I build my own I would like to know what operating system to run on it, and I would also like to know what hardware would make a really good entry level NAS.

edit

I'd like to be able to put oodles of drives in the custom one if I build my own, just for further expansion If I need it.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

I would, but my desktop is my gaming computer and I don't want to use all that power that my desktop draws just for this simple server.

Oh I thought it was a seperate thing

build a NAS, my home server runs on a cheap pentium g3220 (for now) a decent motherboard and raid 10 WD Red drives, runs great and was much cheaper than an equivalent NAS, and is way more flexible

Using Windows Server Essentials (but I got a free copy from a university licence)

I suggest using FreeNAS or something if you dont want to pay
