CPU Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

I am planning on upgrading my i5 cpu to an i7 soon and im not too sure which processor I should get. I dont want to change my mobo so I need a LGA1150 cpu, and I will of course want the best oc'ing and gaming performance. I also stream and do video editing. I havent done too much researching into i7 cpu's yet but if I were to buy today I would be going with the i7 4790k. Any input on i7 performance, and overclock ability will be appreciated. Thanks.

the i7-4790K is a very powerfull micro-processor and it should have you covered for a while.

Most of them overclock really well some will even hit 5ghz in good hands.

it can defenetly handle the tasks you've desrcibed flawlessly. That's all there is to know about it: 8 threads 4.4ghz boost out of the box guarantee so it's binned, efficient and they've improved thermals on it it's a great overclocker perfect for gaming and streaming.

Cant you wait for Broadwell?

Havent even heard about it yet, ill look in to it. And upgrading right now is not completly necessary, I just want to increase my overall performance. But my i5 has gone from a stable 4.7GHz to only 4.5GHz now.

Itll launch by Q1 2015, worth the wait if youre upgrading from i5 and i7 and itll be LGA 1150

Yeah I looked up some of it, my only thing about it is that the only thing everyone really mentioned is that it has lower power consumption. And I couldnt find any desktop comparisons, just laptop.

Yeah theyre not out yet, anyways its up to you and both will serve you quiet well .. but if you want the latest processor youll wait :)

Yeah of course, but in the mean time I will probably see if I can find some more info about Broadwell before making my decision on whether or not to wait for them.

Broadwell won't be the big leap anyhow, for this is just the TICK on the new architecture and you will be able to use Socket 1150 for it. The TOCK will be Skylake.

So getting now an i7 4790K is not a bad plan. That waiting game all the time isn't worth it unless I know, that this certain hardware, I want, is confirmed (not by rumor spreaders) by the manufacturer, that it's going to be released to that date they announce it. And then it remains to be seen what it is, like for a hard upgrade CPU, mainboard, GPU I'm willing to wait. Other things not so much.

But then again, I'm not really having a tight budget :) .

broadwell will have a stronger IGP (useless) and should use less energy...performance should be fairly similar to haswell probably an increase within 3 to 5% at best.

If everything goes well, broadwell cpu's could be higher clocked out of the box and better overclocker as well...that is where the hope lies.
