Just get the best single SSD you can for $500.

A raid 0 setup will give you extremely fast read and writes, but it is not so great in the stability levels. But considering the amount of times an SSD will fail, raid 0 isn't a bad choice, it is just one I wouldn't make.

The first step to insanity is believing in your sanity.

I would also recommend the Samsung 850 pro as the best single ssd solution. However, I recently bought 2 Intel 730 series ssd's for raid 0 since they happened to be cheaper.

I would personally recommend either the Samsung 840 Pro as it's been the gold standard in performance and reliability in SSDs for the past few years, or the 850 Pro for a single SSD setup. The 840 Pro has been dropping in prices lately to make room for the 850, so it's a good purchase in my opinion. If you're more inclined towards newer tech, then maybe the 850 is more suitable. The Pros may be more expensive than other SSDs on the market, but in my view, it's worth spending a little bit more on something that's going to be responsible for holding critical system files.

Intel 730 and 840 pro are amazing ssd's even if not in raid, but one has to wonder if the volatility of raid is even something to worry about with those in raid or even 850 pro's in raid, given how reliable they are and their industry warranties.  Hmm.
