Will my old system be fine with Ubuntu 14.0.1?

I think you will find it is 14.10, the name is after the year, then month it is released on. They have 2 releases per year, 04 and 10.

Although Ubuntu will run on that computer, I can't guarantee it wont be laggy as balls. I suggest you check out crunchbang if it is too laggy for your liking.

 

So, install ubuntu, if it is fine, keep it. If it isn't, try out crunchbang, it is SUPER lightweight and pretty freaken awesome.

I was thinking of installing steam on Ubuntu, as I've heard great things about it. Will steam run fine on crunchbang?

Honestly I have no idea, I have never tried to run steam on crunchbang. It should be fine. Maybe just do a bit of searching, IF ubuntu runs slowly.

I've already got Ubuntu on a USB stick, I'll try it out in a bit and report back.
