USB confusions

Go to solution Solved by QueenDemetria,

Hey everyone! :D

So here's my confusion - when I plug my external hdd into any usb port, and lets say I play music from it, does it go through the internal hdd aswell, or it has nothing to do with it?

I'm confused since It makes sense to me if the data from the usb drive has to go through the internal hdd on its way.

I know that I can easily turn my external hdd into an internal one by removing its cover and connecting it to a sata port, but aside from the superior speed, do I gain any other advantages?

I hope you get my point and any info is welcome :)

P.S. It's my first time posting on this forum so don't sue me for probably not doing it right... :D

The USB drives are completely isolated from your internal harddrive, so the data(like your music) gets read from the flashdrive then gets processed by your CPU(there is more to it, but thats it in a nutshell). The only time your data will go "through" your internal HDD is if you are copying data to or from your USB drive, but even then its not going "through" it. Between the USB 2.0 interface and Sata, Sata is much faster, but if your USB drive is USB 3.0 then there won't be too much difference.

And welcome to the forums :)

Won't be any difference, USB 3.0 is more than enough to saturate even 10,000 RPM hard drives.

But there will be a latency difference of a few milliseconds.
