Hi all, I changed my PSU and motherboard and everything went well until I found that 3 of HDD's weren't detected and weren't even powering up,So I checked and realised I didn't plug in SATA power cables in 2 of them, so I went and did that.Went I powered on my PC, I heard a pop and the topmost HDD which was a 500gb Caviar Blue was smoking, well I immediately removed that one and all of them and waited a few mins before plugging in the other 2,which are 2x1TB WD Caviar Blues,1 of them remained powerless and no signs of life whereas the other one had whirring and abit of clicking(clicksofdeath?) My SSD's are perfectly fine tho.Did a stress test after and everything worked fine besides the HDD's.Any suggestions as to why this happened and what should i do to recover back the data from the hard drives?

Mobo and PSU before change:MSI Z87 G41 PC Mate and Raidmax 1000w AE
After change:ROG Maximus VII Hero and Corsair hxi850

Call Corsair and tell them they broke your HDD's. Just kidding that will accomplish nothing. Sorry man you're screwed.

If they're smoking and making clicking sounds - please don't try and recover the data yourself. If you're sure you heard a 'clicking' sound in one of your HDDs, do NOT turn it on again. You'll just make the problem worse and make it more difficult to recover all of your data.

Contact a professional data recovery centre and send your HDDs to them. Keep in mind though, professional data recovery for HDDs usually starts at around $600-800, so it really is up to you and how important you think the data on those HDDs are.

Good luck.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

I swapped different, known working cables that I used for my SSD's but no difference :( blew a fortune on new hardware and this comes up.Im cry

A known-good cable won't help now.  My suggestion to test it was just to possibly learn what might have happened.

That sucks, though, man.  I'm sorry to hear that.   Losing data is probably worse than losing the hardware.  Although, losing hardware/money definitely sucks.  I've been there.

When you get yourself back up and running, get a backup.   I use a large internal HDD as a backup in my son's computer.   I recommend you do the same.   It's faster and less clutter than a USB drive.

It looks like that power supply is modular.

If you or some one you know has a digital multimeter, you could check the resistance (ohms) of the pins/wires in the power cable you used for the drives.

Maybe one is shorted.

Maybe it's time to keep backups of your data. Perhaps on some sort of home server.
