Ok guys, im looking at building my first gaming rig because i'm done with console and want to join the "Glorious PC Master Race". So lets jump right in.

  • My budget is between $850 and $950 $US. (I'm working 30 hours a week putting myself through college, I'm poor)
  • I'm not looking for 500fps at ultra settings or even high. If i can play Battlefield 4, Borderlands 2, and/or Insurgency on medium and get 60-120fps I'm super.
  • I've never built a pc before but i am up to date on new tech and what the numbers mean, my only problem is knowing what innards will give me the performance i'm looking for. I've only ever dealt with high end PC's and low end PC's who would be better off functioning as single slot toasters.
  • Here is a link to the current build I'm considering   http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9Pbxt6
  • Keep it Intel and Nvidia if you would please.
  • I have my peripherals and insist on the CoolerMaster atx case I have put in the build linked above.

So yea, if you guys could help me in building my mid tier gaming rig i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Well, If this is going to be a mid-tier gaming rig, you REALLY dont Need 16 gigz of RAM, other than that it is solid, just get at least a 128 gig SSD :)

Yea i do see your point with the ram, but im only going to use the ssd for boot and web browsers, 128 seems overkill since it will be running windows 8.1 and eventually 10.

Here ya go redid a couple things the water cooler you had on there would not perform nearly as well as this air cooler and this cooler is cheaper. You also dont need 16 gigs of ram for gaming 8 is more than enough I also pulled off your ssd which made room for a GTX 970 which will give you ultra settings easy and wont need to be upgraded for a few years. You could always get a SSD at a later point unless you would rather give up the graphics performance for it.

Wow, thanks! Do you think it would be worth it to run on my integrated graphics with minimal gaming and wait for the GTX 960 in the coming months to save some cash?

The cost of ram typically isn't that much I'd say. A lot of times I can find 8gb ram and find another from the same company that's within $50 extra and is 16gb. Not to mention even though games now at most require 8gb of ram, who can say for the future.

I'd still get at least a 120gb bro. 64gb brings would leave you barely any room. i have a 128gb ssd, and with win7 ultimate (i also eventually plan on going to Windows 10) and important things, i got about 60 left, it using up around 60 gigs. If i went with a 64 i'd have no room left.

Not really because it probably wont be as cost to performance effective as the 970 is and your first upgrade to this rig should be a 120gig or larger SSD when you can afford it and that should be the only thing you should have to do to this rig for at least 2 years. Plus the 960 will probably release at $275-300 so its not worth it for $50 savings.

Ok, so i took what you guys said into consideration and re-evaluated my first attempt at a build. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6ZBWP6

I'm partial to windforce, but removing the ssd was a good idea. i can wait a while on it if i even ever get one.

What do you think about the 4690k? good choice? any recommendations?

The 4690K is one of the, if not the best CPU out for gaming right now in my opinion. Build looks good!
