Java question about characters

In java, is there a parameter to give charAt() that tells it to look at multiple character?

It looks at the character at that index in a string. 

String s = "Hello"; System.out.println(s.charAt(0)); System.out.println(s.charAt(4)); 

will print out: 

"H" 

"O"

but is there another method that I can use where I can ask it to return a range of letter rather than just one?

So I basically want to do this. The user enters a letter, then the program scans a word thatthe user can't see, and then inserts the letter into the places where it is in the word. It's hangman. How would you do that???

One simple way is to use a loop. Check each character of the hidden word, and if it matches, use that index to know which position to reveal your character.
