So I am anticipating windows 10 to come out and I am curious how "convergent" it really will be, or is that still unknown? Most reading I do doesnt really give a good answer or seems pessimistic. Right now I am using a Sony Xperia Z ultra with android. Ever since my first smartphone I have disliked the lack of functionality that they all share. Ultimately I want an experience similar to that of windows desktop where I can install the same software and deal with any problems with a touch screen myself. I cannot be the only one who wants full desktop-like control and functionality on my phone, and id even jump ship for ubuntu phone but there seems to be little news about it.

Thsi will not happen in the near future. Phones are still not powerful enough to be able to run a fully-fledged Windows and all of the aditional software. Also who will be usign the desktop version of Windows on a phone, the screen is so small it makes no sence at all, it's just stupid. There will be Windows Phone 10, but with the mobile verison, of course.

This is what I thought but we must be getting pretty close with the latest hardware you would think no?

Absolutely not. Smartphone CPUs are still too slow.

A big part for the smooth and fancy GUI on smartphone is GPUs that support fancy features that were developed over the years in computing, and optimizations by software for this kind of low powered processors, and hardware optimizations by both CPU and GPU, to do certain things faster, which smartphone app take advantage of, but not desktop software.

In additions, smartphones will need to emulate x86 programs, so expects further performance drop.

Tablets are getting to the point where they have similar hardware to laptops (not quite desktops), but phones still have a long way to go. The best you can do use a tablet with a docking station and it could be used as a desktop.

For now, convertible ultrabooks are the most versatile option. Great hardware (not quite desktop-grade, but still very capable), good keyboard (something which tablets with keyboard attachments won't achieve for a while), laptop and tablet mode, and can use a docking station with external keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
