Incompatible RAM

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

Are you sure the RAM kit actually works? Just because it's compatible doesn't mean it'll actually function. Take your DIMMs and install one, test it, and it doesn't work, switch out that DIMM for another one. Rinse and repeat.

So I just finished upgrading my CPU and motherboard (from a fx 8350 to a i7 4790k) and now my system is failing to post, and the CPU fans are very loud. I tried re-seating the GPU and RAM multiple times, and made sure everything is connected properly inside and out. So finally I noticed the DRAM LED was solid, its and Asus board so consulting the manual I tried the MemOK! test. According to the test my RAM is incompatible, and I will need to buy new RAM.

So I am wondering if there is any other way to get my RAM to work with my motherboard. If not then can someone suggest to me some new RAM?

i7 4790k

Asus Z97-AR LGA 1150 ATX MB

G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4x4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)

Radeon 7970

The Compatible memory list shows 2 G.skill modules that are compatible

G.SKILL F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL(XMP) 16GB ( 4x 4GB )
G.SKILL F3-14900CL9Q-16GBZL(XMP) 16GB ( 4x 4GB )
If I google your ram, one of those does show up as the full name of your ram kit. So they did test the ram kit you are using, and it should be working.
Does the memory test actually see all 16gb of memory? you could have one or more faulty ram sticks. The sort of ram you have is fine though.

Two things you can do:

A. Overclock the RAM to work with 1866 MHz

B. Underclock the RAM to 1600 MHz.

How can I tell if it sees all 16gb? Although the RAM should be fine I was using it earlier today before I swapped out my motherboard and CPU

Ok so I just tried each DIMM individually and they all worked the PC booted up flawlessly, it also booted with two DIMM installed. But when trying four, the PC turns on then shuts off over and over again.

I reckon it's a problem with one of the DIMM slots.

So should I RMA the board?

Yes.

Did you try adding a third DIMM instead of jumping to four?

I did jump to four. So I just tried three in each slot and they all worked, then I tried all four again and it worked.... I have no idea what got it to work, maybe it wasn't seated properly but I checked that multiple times.

Is there a good way to clean the slots and DIMM because it seems very finicky?

Compressed air if you have any. However, if you know what compressed air is, you'll know that it's not really compressed air. It's chemicals. So when spraying, make sure the board is upright. Otherwise, you'll have to tilt the can and chemicals will start spewing out.

Ok I will try that. Thank you so much for all the help!

If that doesn't fix it, then I would suggest putting your board through an RMA.
