I am looking for a new build, rather CPU, to better fulfill my needs. I do quite a bit of 3D modelling work (Solidworks, Inventor, mostly AutoDesk related software), a tiny bit of video editing, and some gaming, civ 5, battlefield, arma.

I decided about a year ago to chose an i5 3570k platform over x79 purely because of cost and I figured I wouldn't notice much of the performance difference. However, even with my custom watercooling setup I could only ever really get 4.6gHz out of my i5. I just haven't been very happy with the how well my i5 handles the workloads.

So as I see it there are really two options at this point. Get a 4770k and mobo deal at microcenter now, or get an x79 board and a cheapy 3820 to hold me over till i grab a 4930k in Q3.

I live near a microcenter so I have access to their deals. The 4770k would cost less money, but I am afraid I would be making the same mistake I did a year ago and regret it. If I went with the x79 platform, I could invest in a good mobo now and snag a 3820. My concerns with this option is that Ivy will not work and or be compatible with current x79 mobo.

So basically which would make the most sense for me and my needs? Should I go with x79, what motherboard should I get, considering I am watercooling and looking to achieve the best possible overclock? All other motherboard features to me are just gimmiky as all I am really concerned with is the overclock.

A 3820 isn't exactly more powerful than a 3570k. So.. I wouldn't do that just yet. I would hold out for IB-E or just get a 3930k in a few months when/if the price drops a small amount.

Send the 3570k to the electric chair in the mean time and let us know how it goes

I would suggest going for the x79 option. You could always just get an i7 3930k now, instead of waiting for the 4930k. If the upgrades are normal intel ones, it will be a 5-10% performance  increase, which might not be worth getting a 3820 now and getting a 4930k later.

4770k and since you have a custom loop, it will stay cool so you could OC quite a bit, Delid if you want even more. 4930k would be good too, but I would suggest just waiting till that is out and getting it rather than a 3820 which is basicly a Sandybridge i7 on LGA2011. I would say practice delidding the i5 once you get the new processor and if you feel comfortable with it than do to your new processor.

Any i7 in my opinion. That cache and the hyper threading will help a lot i think. Are xeons good for editing as you might be able to go for one of those.
