Its a good temporary choice, but an i5 is MUCH better, and in most games even an i3 is better.

I'd say save up for an i5. G3258 used to be a good choice but now it's basically a placeholder CPU until you can get an i5

I have a very, very tight budget. An I5 is nearly going to be impossible to get. My gtx 590 was off eBay.

For a 'permanent' solution? No. If you plan on upgrading to something like an i5, sure. If you want a cheap 'permanent' solution, get an i3 or save up a bit more for an i5.

It would be temporary. Later, when the money is somehow acquired i would upgrade. The great thing about a pentium mb would be that i could get a I7 or I5

Hi everybody! I have a Gtx 590 graphics card and need a cpu upgrade. Would a pentium G3258 be a good choice? I have 8gb ram, and a 750w psu. Please help!

What is your budget ?

It a fine cpu for 1080p gaming it all depends on what your expectations are. It's the best low budget option available at the moment. I have one that I run for stuff that is high single thread optimized.

Thank you so much. I can greatly alter this list considering i have many components already. Would a A10-7850k be a good sub for the athlon? Also would the Asus Ranger Crossblade be a good fm2/fm2+ upgrade?

Look at the board I say yes it does seem to be a nice mobo to upgrade to. Not sure about the A10-7850K personally am not sure if you can overclock that APU. Personally I would like cpu that I could overclock with.

the g3258 is no good, it cant launch many of the latest games and when they do launch they run like crap and stutter a lot even with the cpu highly overclocked...its 70$ in the drain i recommend anything else instead that can handle 4 threads or more.

if ur aiming for a i5 4690k or i7 down the road, its not a horrible choice, dont expect ultra'd out settings but it packs a power punch for the price, i was going to buy one a few months back but decided to save for an i5 and i think it was a better choice.

now if its a temp cpu i wouldnt see why you wouldnt wait a month or so and save up for an i5 as its 220$ where i live 200 at a micro center

I call BS. Also the only time you wouldnt be able to launch a game is if the dev hardlocked it. I know of one or two games that this has happened to recently and both games didnt need 4 core it was another artificial spec.

The pentium has its place and does a good job at that. If you can wait and save, do it. If the most money you can save or this is as long as youre willing to wait and only the pentium fits in your budget its a great choice.

exactly if you can save up do it but not eveyone can do that or may not to wait. I dont see it as a temp cpu as if you think of it that way, just not buy it and wait.

it doesnt have to be a temp cpu if he plays on just playing games of RIGHT now, newer games are getting more demanding as u crank settings up. Metro Last Light is a perfect example but not every game is like that, far from it actually so it all depends on the buyer, if he is sticking with current games for awhile the Pentium is perfect for now, but if he wants to play the latest and greatest asap hes gonna want to save

See the thing is that games have always been like that. It started all the way back with the 2nd gen C2Q's and the Phenom 2 X4's. You mention metro last light but Metro 2033 was more of a resource hog and is quite a bit older. With games like that youll just have to turn the settings down.

Games actually should require more than they do but with most big titles being ports they dont take advantage of newer PC tech, much less the newest. This has been the way since the Vista/X360/PS3 era. When the 8800 series launch with vista shortly after supporting DX10 and a proper consumer 64bit os variant with 4 core cpus readily available quite a few games were made with all of that in mind but few made as much profit as if they just ports a console game to cash in. There were the MMO shooter Hellgate London that went under about a year after launch and supporting high end hardware to the fullest did have something to do with it. Unless its a PC first game proper full hardware support is very unlikely.

A 7850k is the same cpu as the 760k (basically the same as the 860k) just without integrated graphics -- something you won't be using. A 7850k is just a silly purchase altogether since at it's price point you can buy an R7 250 and a 760k, which outperforms it.
