Hi, I'm in dire need of help as my computer has started freezing lately, so far twice this weekend. My computer freezes and the last sound playing starts stuttering like static noise. The HDD light stops flashing completely and I have to do a hard reboot to clear it. Neither freezes gave any error messages before or after the hard reboot.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Specs:

PSU: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze (2,5 years old)

MoBo: Asrock z77 extreme 4 (1 year old)

CPU: Intel i5-3570K @ 4,5GHz, I passed a 10 hour stress test when overclocking. (1 year old)

Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB Model (2,5 years old)

HDD: Seagate 1TB Barracuda @7200rpm (2,5 years old)

I have the latest BIOS version 2.90

On both occasions I've had these applications running:

Google Chrome, watching a stream from twitch.

World of Warcraft

Battle.net client

Spybot Search and Destroy 2.4

Curse Client

Puush

Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Logitech Gaming Software

AMD Catalyst Control Center

Avast!

Since your CPU is overclocked, that's the first area I would check.

Are you using the stock Intel cooler, and what are temperatures like when your computer locks up? I think your CPU may be overheating.

edit: Also, reevaluate your overclock as @Godlygamer23 mentioned, you may need to add a bit more voltage, or dial down the overclock, as things can change over time.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for my CPU cooling, I also have disabled turbo and using it on 4,5GHz constantly. Temperatures rarely get over 50'C.

I'm going to inrease the voltage of my CPU then.

Remember, .025-.05 at a time, don't go overboard. If it previously ran stable, it could just be deterioration over time. My 4770k initially could OC to 5GHz, now I BSOD on occasion at that clock, so I run at 4.8GHz. Still more than happy with it though  :D

Best of luck.

Updates. Left the clockspeed at 4,5 and increased offset from +0.0015 to +0.0020. After a day of playing/watching streams and stuff I got a bluescreen.

As a result I reverted the voltage increase and reduced the clockspeed to 4,3, bluescreen info below (I can't understand that)

I'm gonna ask you to reset your overclock altogether.

Ok, as a last resort I left the OC on 4,2 and it has been stable now for a week.

Is there a way to mark this as solved but possible to re-open if the issue comes back?

Edit: How do I mark this as solved?
